I know Style was able to shave the head and still get all the women he wanted, but I'm seriously considering getting a hair transplant. My hairline receded a few years ago, my hair thinned out at the back of my head and there's a thin section on top, leaving a slight widow's peak at the front.

Last year I shaved the whole lot off and I've been shaving it since. Prior to that, my response rate on match.com was over 60%. Since shaving I've gone to a better online dating site (okcupid.com, where women can actually read your messages and reply to them), and I send personalised emails to each target rather than a standard form email. But my response rate has plunged since shaving. If I want to get a response I have to send out about 20 emails, and a lot of them to lower quality women.

I'm in good shape, I lead a full and successful life, I have a witty profile, and I've optimized my photos to put my best foot forward, all to no avail.

I've also heard a few comments that make me think that this idea of women finding bald men 'sexy' is just another one of the myths that women believe about themselves. They say they are okay with shaved heads, but when it comes to actually replying to one on an online dating site then it's a different story.

I'm also in the San Jose area where the male to female ratio is terrible from a guy's point of view, so the odds are stacked against me enough as it is. Maybe a restored head of hair would give me the confidence boost I need.

Thoughts...?

In marketing terms: 'ceteris paribus' or only change 1 thing at a time otherwise you don't know what caused the difference. You describe that: 1. you shaved, 2. you went to a different dating site and 3. you write personal invitations. How can you be sure your hair is the cause of drop in response?

My response rate dropped on Match.com after I shaved the head long before I discovered the new site, and there wasn't much of a change in tactics in how I wrote emails at the time, so I'm reasonably sure the head shaving is the problem.

Hmm strange. Most guys I know who shave their heads are quite successfull with the girls. Do you shave like Terry Tibbs (http://www.google.nl/images?q=terry+tibbs) or just with clippers so you have a millimeter left? Completely bald could make you look a bit criminal maybe, especially online where your looks are the first impression.

Just my $ 0,02 though

100% shaved.

I've optimised my photos using mybestface.com, so I doubt if leaving a millimetre on there would help. I find that leaving anything on the head emphasises the difference between how much I have on top and how much I have on the back and sides, which I think is a worse look than shaved.

What if you try it for a while? It takes a week or so to grow that millimeter, make pix, upload them and see what happens.

Hi, long-time lurker, first-time poster here...

Have you looked into DHT blockers? I've been taking saw palmetto for almost 2 months and have noticed quite a bit of new hair growth on my vastly thinning scalp. Takes a while, but it's worth it. Then again, transplants aren't a quick solution either. Granted, herbal medicine will only work if your hair loss is related to DHT production in the body. Just Google "DHT blocker" for more info.

Saw palmetto is the best-known, most readily available and cheapest natural DHT blocker out there. Side effects aren't anything too major (my libido's still strong). Don't go cheap -- buy the good stuff! I got mine at Wal-Mart (of all places!). There are other commercial products out there, such as Propecia and Nu Hair. You can find all that stuff at any Walgreens/CVS-type store. I'm currently taking 450mg of saw palmetto daily (which is probably the maximum I'd recommend, and probably enough to do the job). Much cheaper and less painful than hair transplants, and perhaps more effective in the long term.

As for women who prefer human brillo pads, well, that's their problem. Law of averages, my friend, law of averages. I've noticed many of the women I've met have no problem with it. Some love it! :) It's all about your charisma, personality and how you carry yourself. Which of course is why you're here, right? :)

So, do your homework and look into the herbal approach. And keep us posted. Good luck!

OK, I'm growing it out a little to see what's left. After about five days of growth there was a noticeable difference between the top and the back-and-sides, so I trimmed the back and sides and now it looks a bit more even all over. Still a thinish patch on top across the back of the widow's peak, so I'll let things grow a little more on top and see what happens.

On a more general point, I used to think of myself as a good looking guy and I think that rubbed off on people. Nowadays I don't think of myself as being as attractive as I used to be, and I think that people can pick up on that.

I'm really starting to think that hair plugs might be necessary purely from a self confidence point of view. It's like something I need to do for myself. I've been told that there are deals where you can get an all-inclusive trip to Brazil that includes room and board as well as the surgery for a couple of thousand bucks. Anyone know about that?

Dude, go back and read my post about DHT. Get to the 'root' of the problem. Plugs are expensive, painful and may not even work in the long run.

The herbal route is cheap, painless, and depending on your situation, may actually work.

Here's some more about it:

add-hair dot com

In addition, the most important thing is not what's ON your head, but what's IN IT. Don't let your follicles affect your self-esteem.

P.S. - I'm not a spammer and I get no money for any of this. Just a guy with a little personal 'gardening' project going on. So far, the herbal/diet thing is actually helping me grow hair. I'm not fully covered yet, but it's getting there.

Saw it the first time. You've only made three posts and they're all to hawk that product.

I have my doubts about 'herbal' remedies.

I'm not hawking. Notice I haven't named brands. Any decent brand of saw palmetto works (best bet is one labeled for prostate use, as it seems like prostate health and hair growth go hand-in-hand).

Not saying it will work on everyone (as it is related to DHT-related hair loss), but I've been taking herbal supplements, reducing cholesterol, incorporating more things into my diet (i.e. soy) and using organic products for my scalp for the last four months, and yes, my hair is growing back.

I'm not doing this to supplement my income. I don't own stocks or speculate in the market in saw palmetto. I ain't making any money whatsoever off this. If the powers-that-be want to pay me, sure I'll take it. But this forum is about passing along knowledge. Yes, I do read this forum to improve certain areas of my life (in a bit of a mental/emotional slump right now for various reasons). However, in the interest of sharing, I have come across something that may help others here. And perhaps it's something more effective in the long run than hair transplants.

Definitely hair transplant helps you to get back your original appearance and surely boost your confidence too. Though this process is a bit costly but the result you get will all make the difference. The result of this surgery depends primarily on the surgeon who does it. So it is important to choose the right surgeon who is renowned in this field.
