Hey, decided to try some protein in my diet.

Which one is the best on the market, I don't care about taste, I need THE BEST!
Also, how much to intake, how, and when is it the most effective? How much is the approximate price in Canadian dollars?

Thanks.

Whole sources of protein ie. chicken(poultry), beef, fish or pork and some diary are your best bet 2-3 servings a day mix and match. Dont just focus on one macronutrient, carbs are just as (really more important) than protein as glycogen is the primary fuel of muscle not protein. Startchs and fats are also important.

Eat sensible, train intensly and allow sufficient time to elapse for you to recover and grow (hypertrophy).

What's your goal?

That depends on how much protein you're going to need...

Protein is mainly for repairing damaged muscles, be it through weight training etc

Muscle is not typically damaged through weight training, it is depleted. Glucose goes through glycosis and is "broken down" (very generalization). More can be found in chgapter 2 of the book "Body By Science" by Doug McGuff and John Little.

After a workout drink a glass of orange juice or a coke something high in sugar to replace the glucose lost during the workout. A protein supplement is not nessecary.

Above poster is right in saying that muscle is not damaged, but is wrong in saying that it is simply depleted.

Yes, glycogen is used when weight training, but muscle fibres are also torn, and it is when it is repaired that muscle grows. Because of this, protein is a necessity in any weight training program - protein -> building blocks of muscle.

Personally, I would recommend Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein. It's great value for money, high quality, and most flavors actually do taste decent. It is also whey protein isolate, not concentrate, giving you the best quality you can find.

Sorry but when muscle is torn its an injury!
Muscle is primary composed of water. And glycogen is its primary source of fuel during muscle contractions.

Stop wasting your money on supplements!

If you must supplement with protein: Hormone free all natural whey and/or egg albumen protein with no bullshit added. Most popular brand is Jay Robb but if you go to health food stores or specialty shops you may find others.

Yes, glycogen is the FUEL the muscles use during the workout, but to BUILD muscle, you need protein. I've always followed teh 40/40/20 plan, and it works wonders.

Poster below mine is a retard.

Muscle fibers are not torn? This is basic weight training knowledge.

Protein not necessary? Please, read a book.
Quote:
Muscle hypertrophy, or building, occurs after muscle tissue has been broken down by weight training and/or some type of progressive overload that stimulates tearing of the muscle fibers. The body then responds by healing and rebuilding the injured muscle tissue fibers, a process that results in the repaired muscle fibers growing back bigger and stronger. This very important component of muscle building occurs in the immediate aftermath of a workout. The actual physical activity that results in muscle tissue breakdown does not actually build muscle; rather, it serves to stimulate the muscle building process by creating the muscle damage that ultimately results in muscle tissue being repaired, strengthened, and made to increase in size.
ZOMG MUSCLE FIBERS ARE BROKE ZOMG INJURY!!!!11

Muscle fibers are not literally torn.

But have you ever heard of micro-trauma? Exercise physiology 101

I'd say about 98% of supplements are evil but a little bit of supplemental protein can come in handy if your goal is to either preserve or build a muscle. Remember, whey protein was originally used to help victims of deep burns and muscular trauma to recover. That still doesn't make it scam proof though, remember to read the labels and be weary of any shady phrasing like "proprietary blend" or when you see lots or parenthesis used.

Best proteins are always going to come from whole foods. No one should argue that.

Primal is right. You want most of your protein intake to be from natural sources like chicken, steak, fish, etc. Think of it this way, if a caveman couldn't eat is, you shouldn't eat it. Avoid most packaged or boxed processed foods. The exception to this rule would be SPAM, whole grain bread, and brown rice.

If your looking for protein powder, I recommend products from Optimum Nutrition. I have used both Nitrocore 24 and their 100% Whey Gold Standard. Both are great products and I recommend them to everyone.

If you want to check out Nitrocore 24 here's a link: http://www.optimumnutrition.com/product ... p-261.html
And if you want to check out Gold Standard here ya go: http://www.optimumnutrition.com/product ... p-201.html

Hey, I am actually looking to gain some muscle weight. I'm 5'10 and 158 pounds. The opinions here are actually very different, so I don't know what to do yet.

K I know what im talking about. You should have 1 g of protein per body weight and 1.5 - 2 if your hard gainer. Try optimum nutrition whey protein its the best protein with the amount of dollars or isoflex whey protein for best quality, but expensive. Since ur Canadian though supplements will be more expensive so about $75 for 5 lbs of optimum nutrition whey and about $90 for isoflex whey. Get chocolate for best taste in my opinion and buy a shaker cup.

It really doesn't matter how you get your protein though because in the end its all the same. if you have time to get in the meals eat foods like tuna, chicken breast, lean steaks to get your protein. The shakes will just help you get ur daily intake of protein easier. Diet is much more important than the working out itself if you want to get bigger, but also have an intense workout.

K if you want to gain lean muscle weight do as i said in the first post about protein find out ur daily calorie intake add 500 to it eat clean and occasionally have 1 cheat meal per week if your will is weak. There are also supplements that can help if you don't have enough time to get ur meals in to reach the amount of calories you need. They are called weight gainers. Some good brands are serious mass by optimum nutrition or cyto gainer i recommend both very good, but again since u live in Canada supplements are expensive. I don't know about you that well though so if u have any heart conditions or any conditions you should first see your doctor.
