In my opinion, you have two main options:

The first: Work your whole body out. Do legs, bi's, tri's, lats, shoulders, traps, legs, abs, pecs, everything mate. Do this properly, and for the next couple/few days you should ache somewhat. This is good because you can normally do it all in like an hour and a half. You'll end up probably doing this about every 3 or 4 days once you're into it.

The second: Go for shorter sessions, working less muscles, with more frequent trips- This means say you do triceps and pecs on monday, tuesday you will do biceps and lats, wednesday you will do legs and shoulders, thursday you'll do abs and back..then friday you go back to triceps and pecs. Go 6 times a week.

As a rule of thumb though...if you leave the gym and you can physically lift ANY more weight without collapsing, you haven't done enough.

Each workout is around 20 minutes. Combined with showering and getting dressed, etc I'd allocate around 45 minutes a day for insanity, if your straight to business that is.

Around thirty minutes. I would ike to do longer, but I'm already done after thirty minutes, because I try to all my stets in quick succession.

I was going to the gym for an hour-ish of cardio 3-4 times a week, swimming a few times a week and doing some light weight exercises for 30 minutes or so a few times a week.

Now I cycle 30-50 minutes every day (commuting), swim for 40 minutes a few times a week and do the same weight sessions.

I've no idea if that's considered "right" or not, but it's certainly working for me, having lost 70lbs at a fairly steady 3.5lbs/week whilst still gaining some lean mass and eating a healthy, but reasonably forgiving diet.

I guess it's a very individual thing though, and will vary depending upon your goals/diet. My main aim was weight loss whilst toning up a little in order that I don't look like I've starved myself when the blubber is gone. I'm still 245lbs (6'3" tall) now, but the improvements already are impressive. I doubt what I'm doing would work for a skinny guy trying to bulk up.
