I'm a Freshman at a major University in the USA. I'm very confused on what to wear. I feel like I've matured from what I wore in high school, but I don't know if I'm ready to start wearing chinos, dress shoes, and button ups every day. Any suggestions on 'must have' outfits? Cool styles? Etc. Any input is appreciated.

Must have outfit:

Navy Blazer/ Navy blue suit will do as well.
Jeans/Chinos
Brown dress shoes
Brown belt
Hanky
A few decent ties. (Silt Ties T.M Levin will do the trick)
Shirts (slimfit / fully fitted)

and by the way: a classic mistake I do see a lot of people make: Navy Blazer and Black jeans. Do not ever do it.
Dressing like that is fucking gold. I never had 9's approaching me before, but if I overdress they do give me a lot of attention, and yeah by a lot I mean it.

Think about colours, girls will notice when you mix the right colors.

Red tie goes good with a red hanky & blue shirt

Pink shirt - Blue tie - blue or white hanky etc.

go on art of manliness.

On uni and campus I dress down. People are shocked sometimes when I arrive and overdress cause they are used to me being underdressed. Also make sure suits / jackets and everything fits a 100% it will show.

What the other guy posted is good "going out" wear, but as far as everyday clothing, you're going to need to find a good personal style. However, there are some basic rules to follow: no sweat pants, no shirts with shit writen all over them, no abercrombie and fitch! You don't want to look like a slob, homeless man or a frat boy. You want to look laid back, masculine, like you have your shit together, and like you get laid alot. Look at some "attractive man" celebrities and see what they wear (or someone else you know that gets laid A LOT, because then you will be dressing like someone who gets laid a lot, naturally) I started patterning my style after Hank Moody in Californication and Bradley Cooper. Now I have an instinct to where I can recognize if something's going to look good on me.

All I need are the following:

A navy button up (tailored)
Black button up (tailored)
A light blue button up (just like Bradley Cooper's in The Hangover) (tailored)
A white button up (like BC in The Hangover 2) (tailored)
A light blue-sort of jean looking-button up/hoodie that I found at a consignment store
Dark grey, white, yellow, light blue, light grey solid T-Shirts (you can find these at American Eagle for like 15 bucks, get lots!)
A black leather jacket
P-Coat
Two pairs of blue jeans, one darker, one normal
One pair of khakis
Stylish Leather boots

That's pretty much it. Just experiment. Try out different stuff. Some will work for you and some won't. Just remember: wear clothes that don't make you look like a child, and get clothes that fit. (Or have them tailored. Which you really should do anyway.)

I appreciate the feedback. I checked out a bunch of the stuff you guys recommended. Just wondering, what "stylish leather boots" are you recommending exactly? I feel like that's a pretty ambiguous, and I could waste my money and look like a clown getting the wrong kind. Also, what did you mean by "hanky"? A legit hanky to blow your nose with? or a type of clothing I'm not familiar with?

I too faced a similar problem. When I went to university for higher study. I usually used to wear blazer and formal dress like shirt ,tie and pant. After few days, you will know the fact of the university and also the uniform of the college.

One doesn't need to worry much for college wears as there is no particular style or dress-up stereotyped for college. Just look casual and relaxed in whatever You wear up.

I think you can wear in the university simple jeans and any color of T- shirt. In my point view, it's best dress for university.

Just make sure your clothes fit properly. Too many guys (especially in the USA) wear clothes that are 3 times too big. Baggy is not a good look. Find slim fitting shirts, decent fitted jeans etc. It makes a lot of difference!

I'm a student but I'm also experienced in dance. I've got 3 years of experience under my belt and have done a few improv battles as well so take my ideas with a grain of salt.

I dress with a bright fitted shirt from american eagle, neon green shoes, neck warmer that wears like a bandanna, and bracelets on one arm. I attract a lot of attention that way. But then again I'm the flashiest danced out there even if I don't throw in a back flip.

People always dress in what they feel like wearing...

BUT AND I WILL SAY IT HERE...you in a sense should be dressing for the girls you want...

If you don't know what kind of ladies you want, then take a dam seat for 1 hour and figure it out.
Then you must figure out, what THEY WANT, and attune your attire to that.

I like people who others would call high-maintenance possibly because I'm a high-maintenance guy myself...I like the classy ladies, those who dress phenomenally, and are sexy dressing, those who like fine-dining and pampering and vacations and so on...

SO what do I do? I attune to what I know they would like, a guy with a nice car, button up shirts, and pants and so on... Guess, Armani Exchange and Express and other similar clothes...

Yea go ahead dress however you like, but I find that ever since I attune myself to the kind of ladies I want, ever since I changed myself to be what the ladies I want, want in a guy it's easier, much more fun...aside from that I think it works out well in my case, I look high-maintenance, I wouldn't settle for a lady that's not on par with me...and I'm sure a lady wouldn't settle for a guy that's not on par with her or better too.

----

So keep it in mind, dress how you like, but if you dress with a target in mind, you'll be better off.

I know it matters more what's inside the clothes than the clothes.

Does anyone have an experience where by changing what you wore it changed your success (and not because you started dressing better and so you feel more confident), but really went from one style to another?

Liked all your suggestion about summer collection. Try out Modz.fr for heavy summer collection.

I honestly wouldn't go that far into peacocking your dress code. I would do what is comfortable. Dark jeans (tight, not skinny, well both count but I would NEVER be caught in skinny jeans, I like to have my balls).

Anyways, so dark jeans is fine, nice shoes - does not have to be dress shoes but as long as they are well kept, that is fine. According to girls I have talked to even, they can figure everything out about a man just by their shoes...

Just from a quick google search here is a "breakdown" i guess - not so sure how valid this person's article is though: http://thoughtcatalog.com/2011/judging- ... they-wear/

In regards to shirts, you can wear ties, shirts and blazers and that's all good. I did dress up with a dress shirt, a tie and a sweater vest and went to the pub ONLY because we were having a classy night later that night at my place - so I was ready for my night plans anyways.

Yes, I did get a lot of attention, because I stood out - the shot girls were even begging me to buy shots, it is still attention when they come from behind you, wrap their arms around you and shove their tits in your head, and you STILL get free shit when you dont buy a shot - note: I did not game, I did not know about the game then and I wish i did x_x

Anyways, I do have a nice dress coat I wear out when it is cold at night, that brings in attention. I wouldn't say dress the same every day / every weekend. This is college, you will see the same amount of people ALL 4 years with a few mixing in and out. My rule of thumb, if you look well kept, you are good.

My biggest peacocking thing, and I get compliments alllll the time cuz of it - I have an ascot hat (look it up if you don't know what it is) and omg does that grab the girls attention. I just need to perfect my irish / Scottish accent to fuck with them haha.

College rule tip: read Conquer Your Campus and learn early, unlike I did.
