"Smart casual" is what I'd suggest generally. Imagine you're trying to dress like an old-money WASP generally- you've got money but you aren't going to be vulgar or crude. Something like Jcrew should give you a general sense of the look.
Most colleges are very casual, but some peer groups will definitely have a look- a lot of southern frat bros would wear Sperry's, brown pants, button ups and maybe a jacket if they were out and about. Generally avoid any t-shirt that has visible logos or text on it, aside from a college t-shirt.
Whatever you do make sure what you buy fits.
