Wow! I think it is funny when guys have the issue of girls lying and saying they have BF. I never ask. Most of the time girls tell me they are single, or find ways to drop in that they are single. I've even had girls get protected by their friend when they said she has a BF and they told me they were single minutes later.
Don't ask a girl if she has a BF if she does you just reminded her, if she doesn't then you can keep talking like 2 human beings. You don't game girls you be a high quality mate that women love to choose, then go from there. Keep approaching but every interaction shouldn't be about gaming a girl. Having a conversation with a girl can get you far faster then gaming a girl.
If you ask you set the tone of what you are looking for. Though it's known, it's not always good to spotlight your intentions(I'm not saying to avoid joking about sex, merely that you should show no need in qualifying her). Asking about her current single status is spotlighting your intentions. If you build enough attraction and sexual tension everything will be smooth.
