I imagine doing something like using some kind of excuse, say you were just being social and say you'd make a good friend, maybe you'll get on with my friend, and then introduce them, then flee.

I think just turning the tables should work.
Just invite both of them somewhere, and then have a built in time constraint so that you have to leave.
they will either hit it off, or they won't. I would warn the male in advance of what you are doing.
