One of my favorite that I said just like this and work a lot is :
after she talk about her a little bit and happen to cross around a negative subject (such as a recently broke up with boyfriend) in her life

I say :
"Yeah..I understand, but that the past, The futur is more interesting."

It change the mood completly to a happy and more connected moment. link it back to me. While watching her in the eyes.

yeah,
listening. if u listen to her u can have hooks and build up on that. limit opinion questions. and exaggerate commonalities to build rapport like:"OMG are you serious? u like pink? I LOVE pink" haha almost homosexual.
