| I FINALLY approached a girl in the street today. Didn't even go out to do it. I went out to do a photo-shoot but afterwards, waiting by the bus top, I saw this girl wearing a nice sun dress with bee's on it. I couldn't miss this chance! I love bugs! (not bees though). I wasn't waiting for the bus, I was waiting for someone to pick me up. Heres how my first approach in the street, ever, went:
ME: Do you know when the bus is coming?
HER: 4 Minutes!
(I was on a bench. I got up and went over to her now:)
ME: 4 minutes...hmm...I don't know this area well, thats why I'm asking. Ehh, I have a ride. Guess I'll wait for that. Nice dress! Are those...bees?
HER: Yep! I love bees. One of my favorite bugs. Very important for the environment.
ME: I love bugs, but not bees...they sting! I mean, yellow jackets can sting over and over again! Honey bees die after the first. Do you like Praying Mantids?
HER: Yes, I love those!
(Ok, this is where I may have stumbled. I had to think fast on my feet, and number close quick, before the bus came.)
ME: I have some exotic ones! I've fed a wasp to one before, but it's risky because wasps are so aggressive! I've tried a bumble bee, but it was too fat, so I let it go. Wasn't even that bad. Bumble bees are friendly. You wanna see them? The praying mantids? I ugh...on facebook? Ones black, the others yellow...ones a ghost mantis...the others from india?
(She paused. Was I too quick to talk about facebook?)
HER: Umm...I think I have seen one of those before!
ME: Yeah they're cool. Sorry to ask you about that, I just like talking to people about insects! I'm trying to get more people interested. We don't have much an insect community in Portland. Mostly in Ohio. But here...I'm just trying to get more people involved!
HER: No, no, no, it's ok! (She grins)
ME: Listen, I'd like to get your number so I can keep in contact.
HER: Ok, sure!
(I take out my phone. I struggled trying to figure out to add her name as a contact. She gave me her number and I just texted it, and figured out to put her name in later. I had forgot how to use my phone, being sort of nervous!)
I went back to the coffee table outside, grabbed my coffee, and waked away, as she hopped on the bus. I had to close in less than 4 minutes, which was why I had to be fast and hurry up with the number.
Anything I could have done better? I think the "pick-up line" asking about the bus is really effective. It's carrying the convo thats harder. This was my FIRST street number close! Advice appreciated, if you see anything wrong with my approach! _________________ -don't wait. Act.
