I have found myself in the situations, where I dont know exactly how to respond.
It's flattering and take balls from the other part to say.
You want to give something back but how?
I see a few different options:
1) Give a compliment back;
It's allright, but can easily be seen as you are a superficial guy and not honest about what you're saying - puts you in a "nice-guy" box.
2) Say "thank you.";
Something modest, but can come across as arrogant.
3) Approve, and back it up, like "Yeah, I know";
A confident responds, but too cocky.
4) My favourite - Devaluate yourself;
This have worked wonders for me!
Example: A compliment on your muscles/physical appearance.
Whenever I have gotten one of those I say something like:
"Thanks, but don't enjoy it too much - I'm gonna eat a nice, greasy cheeseburger tomorrow".
It puts the compliment down to a grounded level and shows that you have your shit together.
What are you thoughts?
I'm still working on a good alpha-way to handle compliments for my personality.
It allways flatter the shit out of me.

Usually works pretty well. Women don't compliment my white sport coat or my DC hat because they would wear it... They compliment me on it because they are attracted to me.
