Yes thats right breaking rapport with your body language.
I've seen it done a million times, but I didn't know it! Watching a natural that I couldn't quite get my head around. Why is he so cool?! I kept asking this question, lucky he's a friend or I might have gotten jealous :p. Instead I tried to figure him out, not become him but break down what he does.

I have to give gambler a bit of credit for this, in his book he puts all the elements there for you to read in one place. It was the first time I had thought about it all at one time and it became apparently clear!

He's breaking rapport with his body language! He's looking alpha to the max and is well groomed, he's opening or provoking a response and as soon as he has them hooked he makes them work for him.

He does it be talking quietly or putting his hands in his pockets and fidgeting about so that his attention is elsewhere, but maintains his alpha stance and she helps his status for the room anyway.

It's important when doing this you don't demolish your alpha characters, just keep the strong ones, make little ones obvious. You don't even have to speak loudly at all, just speak in a calm and relaxed manner. Its not low status because your breaking rapport and you're in a hook if you open with alpha bodylanguage and she looks you up and down, or even she opens you.

i read your blog, it sounds like the dude is breaking rapport by looking around as if to see if there is anything more interesting going on than this girl he is talking to, therefore making her think she needs to try harder.

yes, this is a natural thing to do, people do this when they get nervous and or bored look around, hands in the pockets, fidget etc.

It works because they think you are getting bored with them, and it's probably true. And if you demonstrated value and showed alpha they will want to keep your attention.

if you ask him, he prob isn't even aware of it, I do this, but it's just a natural thing. great observation, and thanks for pointing it out.
