If I would say like "where are you headed" That would seem intrusive, so I was thinking more along the lines of "Do you know where [place] is?" Then if she does or doesn't what could I do after?
Also what are some good fluff topics / open enders that I could ask / talk about when I'm in a group setting or maybe just talk about with a girl in my class?

On public transport - I just say "So where are you headed to today?" and I let myself come across as someone who's just starting conversation because it's good to talk to people - with a genuine smile - and I make sure the conversation stays on how interesting her work or study is, and never ever touches on exactly where it is, closest thing is maybe the name of the university. That way I'm obviously not a stalker. Then I escalate my interest in what she's doing, so it's obvious I'm interested in what she does or what she thinks about something, as opposed to just hitting on a hot girl. Then I can go for a phone number or facebook depending on the vibe, saying that she's really interesting.
That's my goal, how I go about it may change, eg. I can remember saying "You're really interesting" with my eyes - because I smiled and stared at her before we had to part, and then said "Do you have facebook?" It could use refinement but I still get results.
