heres three ways to transition

1) examine her body language
ex.
"why are you crossing your arms? who you trying to intimidate?"
"i know that smile..."

2) i didn't interupt anything did i?
this is a less needy way of saying "what were you guys talking about"

3) did you hear about... blah blah blah
something interesting that happened or you heard on the news etc.
