N-closed a girl on an online dating site. We live in the same town, but she's with her parents in the holidays. I'm planning to send her an SMS like this:

"Merry Xmas morning, miss (funny in-joke name)! Send me a message when you're back in town! Have a nice day :)"

Is it good, or should I rather write something else?

Your first text should be like your opener. it's not about the content, just initiating conversation.

Sending a big long winded text also conveys too much internet. Two other issues are. 1st you are creating an artificial time delay by asking her to wait until she's back. 2nd is it doesn't allow you to game her a bit while she's away.

You're right about these issues.

How about calling her instead? That conveys some confidence. Or should I not bother calling until I want to set up a date?

Since you closed her online calling her is CRITICAL but I'd send that kind of text first as a ping - just to make sure she knows what your number is first, then def call, don't bother with text game until after you have a good 20 or 30 min conversation on the phone.

or longer, longer the better.

since you never met here online, you never talked to her in real life so you have 0 real comfort. If she's super desperate she'll meet up with you in person but if she's got any level of social experience you'll need to build basic comfort first.
