Right, so as a newcomer to the Game, I feel like I’m in a perfect position right now. I’ve moved to England for a few months for my study, and I feel like this is the perfect scenario to start practicing the game.

I speak English fluently as a second language. Many people take me for a native speaker until I tell them I’m from the Netherlands. My language amazes many people which, in my book, can be used as a DHV or at least used to trigger a conversation.

Its England. I’m only staying here for a few months, so even if I keep crashing & burning miserably I won’t see any of these people in my life anymore.

I’m staying at a small village, but it’s close to a big city and has a huge University on its border. As such, in a few weeks Freshers Week will start here, meaning the place will be flooded with students. Plenty of targets to choose from.

As for this particular instance, I just recently arrived in the aforementioned village and was looking for the place I was going to work. On my way, I come across this group of students across the road. I decide to approach and ask the way. I see this girl turning towards me as I begin talking. She’s about a 7, nothing that spectacular, but she did have ginger hair. I have a thing for redheads.

Me (not really trying anything at the moment aside from finding where I’m supposed to go): Hey, excuse me, could you point me towards –shop name-?

Redhead: No, sorry, we’re all new here as well.

Other guy: All I know is that the town square where all the shops are is that way.

Me: Right, thanks, I’ll try my luck there then.

They wish me good luck and I’m on my way again, not really thinking anything of it other than being happy to have approached a few strangers. Gotta keep appreciating these small victories in life.

Fast forward about twenty minutes later. I found the place, filled in the form and went on my way again. This time I was heading towards the university as one of the people I’m staying with is a teacher there. We were supposed to meet up there. As I head in the direction of the university I find myself following the same group of students. As we make a turn, I’m suddenly eye-to-eye with the redhead again, who is holding open a gate for the other students to pass. She recognizes me, but her face doesn’t show any specific emotion.

Redhead: Did you find the place you were looking for?

Me: Yes, I did, luckily.

Redhead: Clever. (at least, that’s what I think she said, it was a mumble so I wasn’t sure. She was closing a heavy gate that blocked the path to the way to the university so she was probably occupied)

Me: I am clever.. sometimes.

- short silence as I walk behind her-

Redhead: So, what are you going to study?

Me: I’m not a student. I’m from the Netherlands.

Redhead: Really?! I thought you were English. Your accent is amazing!

- some small talk-

Me: So do you have any idea where we are going?

Redhead: No idea. *laughs* We’re just trying to find our way.

Me: No worries, just keep looking. If we try to ask directions and the reply is in Gealic, we know we went wrong somewhere.

Redhead: *laughs*

At some point, some other students catch up to us just as I mention the awful pink bag on wheels I’ve been carrying around all the time. My luggage. I just got off the train and hadn’t had the chance to put it somewhere yet.

This other students, also a girl, walks up to us. She’s somewhat taller than me (at a mere 5,6 many people are) with a distinct hooked jaw that I remember, but she had a nice figure.

New Girl: I love your bag. Pink is the absolute best color!

Me: It’s my dad’s. He’ll be glad to hear someone finally agrees with his fashion sense.

The girl, the redhead and another guy who caught up to us laugh.

So I follow the students around, talking mostly to the redhead. I find out she’s from Liverpool. I ask her how the night life is, and she tells me it’s great. She asks me my name. I give mine and ask hers. At one point we arrive at the classroom where they are supposed to have their lecture. I decide, for funs sake, to just sneak in.
As the students walk in, I ask the teacher where I can leave my bag. She motions towards a chair in the corner. After leaving the bag I make eye contact with the redhead, who is already seated in the back. She raises her hand, smiling and motioning me to sit next to her. As I sit, she giggles about the fact that I snuck into her first lecture, saying “This is so funny.”

So the lesson starts (it’s about math) and at this point we both pay attention to the screen. Every once in a while I lean in and tell her something to make her laugh. From the corner of my eye I see her putting on perfume and playing with her hair while looking at the screen. I’d like to think these were IOI’s, but a classroom lecture is a bit different from a club since the attention isn’t always on social interaction.
The lesson’s at an end, I borrow her pen to write down something. Outside the classroom, she asks her pen back. I start fumbling my pockets.

Redhead: Haha, its fine, you can keep it.

Me: Never mind, I found it. *hands her the pan*

Redhead: So.. it’s been great to meet you.

Me: Yeah, it was fun. But I should look for the person I’m staying with, she might be getting worried. It’d be nice to see you again, though. Maybe in Liverpool sometime?

Redhead: Yeah, alright.

At this point, I think I failed. Her reaction to meeting again seemed to be a bit ambiguous to my taste, and I know one of my sticking points is that, when it comes to actual flirting, I tend to overanalyze, get discouraged easily, basically do everything you shouldn’t. As a result, I miss opportunities.

Me: Can you recommend anything?

Redhead: I just returned, haven’t been there for 5 years.

Me: Right, well, it was a pleasure meeting you! See you later!

And that’s that. The question that bothers me is: Should I have gotten her phone number? I feel like I could have number-closed this, but I’m still new to the game and I remember reading in Neil Strauss’ book that one of Mystery’s advices was to let the girl suggest giving her number. I was waiting for that opportunity. In hindsight, I think I could’ve asked her myself.

Regardless, what do you guys think? Should I have asked? Perhaps any comments on my conversation itself?

Cheers,

Bluefinger
