Short answer... YES!

i find its not really easy to ask for numbers as its not a normal situation in meeting someone as opposed to at a club.
I know exactly what you mean, basically you have to make it normal. If you see a guy who is successful with women this is something he does, he doesn't even consider rejection he goes in and asks her in a way it almost seems as if she would be the one who is embarrassed.

I just think it would of been well embarrassing getting rejected in a restaurant especially with the one time of the year that i go shopping with my mum!!!

I laughed at this, it would be embarrassing but for how long? chances are you won't ever see any of these people again except from... well maybe your mum, unless she decides to throw you out of the house and never speak to her again for being such a tool.
To put it into perspective, a situation is only as embarrassing as you make it really, ive seen guys brush the most horrific moments off like they don't mean nothing. Whilst others have turned the very same moments into the ultimate cringe. Example, guy falls down, guy gets back up, guy laughs. Guy falls down, guy looks about to see if anyone noticed, guy gets all embarrassed and walks away quickly. Once you realize this and realize that rejection is painless you won't fear it at all.
