Is there a way of making this sound more positive or funny or something? I don't know, something stupid like "I miss you like the lost socks behind my couch"

If you like her more and say "I miss you" then you come off as beta. Most girls do not want to be the dominate part of the relationship.
If she likes you more, then "I miss you" will just sound like you are caring for her.
Usually, though, if you're asking whether or not to drop the "I miss you" bomb, then it means something is telling you it is not natural, and it won't go over well.
I dunno about adding in the "socks behind the couch" part.
It will help to qualify your statement if you like her more and make you less needy; but again, if she is the one with the power, things like "I miss you" are not going to go over well.
The "socks behind the couch" part will probably backfire on you if she likes you more. You are turning "I miss you" into a flip statement and you will no longer come off as a caring guy. Since you are the one with the power in this context your statement could come off as condescending.

She's the one with all the power, and I probably like her more than she does me right now. We travelled some of New Zealand together for a couple of weeks and I didn't make the most of it.
I plan to contact her in a couple of months when I return from my South America travels hopefully having learned a few things and toned up at the gym.
