However I was just in that situation and the girl started dumping her problems on me. I chose to give her my opinions (not necessarily my honest opinions) and just chose responses that demonstrated that I was a great guy. It worked out well and I ended up kiss closing her right afterward. _________________ <Jac>

If you are any good at it, eventually you will hit her wall, and she'll hate you for it, because she can't face that issue, and will project that anger and confusion onto you, for directly addressing it.
If you aren't, you'll go in an endless circle of advice, and she'll even hold you responsible for any advice that went bad.
Either way, it ends badly.
You don't have to ignore her problems, but you can at least encourage her to think for herself. If you have to, give her multiple options, and the kind of advice that requires her to go away and think about it and try things to solve it herself.

If you handle the situation correctly, she will know what topics she can approach you with, and which ones to leave for her girlfriends. _________________ Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. - Robert Greene

They just want to talk about the problem. They're emotionally minded instead of logically minded like men. Men see problems and want to solve them. Women are perfectly capably of coming to the same solutions that we do. They don't want us stating the obvious. They just want to know that the way they are feeling about the problem is okay.
So DON'T give your 2 cents. Don't solve the problem. Don't be the strong man. Just commiserate. Agree that so-and-so is a douche. Don't tell her what you would do in the situation.

Haha...
