I have only ever been in relationships where I live within a couple of miles of my partner. However we live in different places, about 40-50 miles apart.
She also works in a bar so it's kind of hard to see each other often (bad hours etc) - it's not like we can just meet at the weekends, we generally see each other mid week. I work 9 - 5.30 Monday-Friday.

At least once a week is good to see the girlfriend. More if possible as things get more serious. 40-50 miles is almost a LDR but not quite. My fiance' I have been with 3 years. Until we moved in together I was driving 65 miles to see her here around Nashville. It sucks not being "around the corner" from her and the added time sucks cause if you hang out late you have a long drive and that sort of stuff. It definitely messes with the logistics here and there. Definitely push to see her at least once a week, maybe stay the night
(Keep a bag packed with some stuff in your trunk) anyways, then as things get more serious see what you can work out. Take any opportunity you can to see her. Maybe you can take her out before she goes in to work on the weekends, and you'll probably have a few late nights during the week as well. Love knows no boundaries.
