Been with my gf for about a month, but haven't made anything official because it feels good and I don't feel the need to have that childish "are we going out" convo. Anyway, I log onto Facebook and I see she changed her status to "in a relationship." Cool, whatever, who gives a fuck.

She texts me and says

"I wanted some entertainment yesterday, so I changed my fb status on in a relationship, the results are pretty funny."

She has a gazillion friends or whatever. So I said "Yea I saw that. You broke your followers hearts it would seem" and I left it at that because I have never dealt with Facebook (new to it) relationship changes. I left my status as single because I don't want to become so exclusive and rushed into this thing.

Everyone is telling me once it goes to in a relationship on Facebook it becomes "offish" or whatever the fuck stupid lingo they use.

Is it me or does that seem like she did that just to see what other people think? Or to wait on a response from me?

No, seriously though - The whole FB status thing is silly, but there's really no other reason to update it except to tell people you're proud of who you're with.

I suppose it's also a new (childish) way to have the exclusivity talk.

It's not as silly as you say that it is.
I was once with someone that he kept his relationship status single and told me that he did not want people to know about his life online. One day I wrote to his wall "where are you baby?". I received two hours later a message from another woman " who are you calling baby? That's my boyfriend!".
He had to admit afterwards to both of us the truth.
Also women when we are browsing on facebook to flirt or if we respond back to someone we always check their relationship status.. in case something like my experience happens. Who wants an angry gf after them really?

The hard truth is that this field exists in Facebook so that Facebook can better target advertising to you. Buy Facebook advertising and you'll see what I mean - you can target people in relationships, single, divorced, etc of a certain age group.

It's not there to be purely informational, though it also serves that purpose.

A younger generation now basically uses it to become 'official' or exclusive. "Facebook Official" as they call it... It's an easy, modern-day way of having "the talk".

As a girl reading what she did I am sure she wants to establish that they are exclusive and search if there are any unknown skeletons in his closet.
Why would she change her status on facebook and risk losing the rest of her options? For the sake of being in a "relationship". I usually put that I am "married" or "in a relationship" or even "enganged" when I am not IF I have too many guys hitting on me.
