I am not saying I am the expert in this field, but in my 43 years of life I have a few experiences under my belt. What I will talk about here is something our parents never told us but probably should have. “Don’t lose your sense of Individuality”! Don’t become one of those couples that completely merge into one entity. A relationship is not a melding of two people; it is two individual people coming together. As soon as the individuality is lost, so is the relationship…

All of us want to live a happy life no matter if we are alone or with a lifelong partner, but many times people get together and then give up the things that they love “individually”, such as hobbies and interests because they are completely absorbed in their partner. This is a perilous road to travel; within month’s/years the relationship will begin to die. It will do this because these two individuals caused themselves to become bored to death with each other. And all of this happened because they gave up their individuality.

I dated a lifelong friend who was a very spiritual person, she used to quote Buddha and Krishna often, one quote I recall from Buddha is “If you spend enough time with a person you will see only their faults. Even if you were with the Buddha himself you would find something not to like“. I truly believe this is fact, and I can say this happens in relationships when we give up our individuality and try to live life as one person. Think back to when you first met your partner, you both had other things going on, friends, fishing, shopping, art, online games, whatever your individual likes were, well believe it or not, this is part of what attracted you to one another in the first place. So why do we always seem to give those things up?

I know as well as the next guy that keeping hobbies and past times going later in life is hard, there is work and responsibilities that must be done, now add a relationship and you will start to think, “When will I have time for it all?” Time management is hard work, but you must learn to make a real effort to spend time apart and do some of the things you enjoy as an individual, do something to spend some time apart every week. You will be a much happier couple if you do!

Peace…

This was a great post. Because most guys get "whiped" and then they only spend time with there girl friends. Then they stop what they loved doing. Good job man. This will teach somebody something.
