Started reading this and thought "this guy has explained the gist of it really well." Then saw my quote and was like "oh someone liked it..awesome."
Yeah OP, you're stuck in the situation where you're not going to get actual proof something is going on, but the signs are in your face. You're going to get excuses that I'm sure will make sense.
