I found this on a right wing newspaper. It's supposed to be an attack, but I think, if true, that it's pretty brilliant...especially as it applies to whether it actually works or not. Although in theory if it worked he would have won by a greater margin.

You guys are seriously dumb. I don't know why people keep coming up with all this "omg, obama uses NLP", "omg, that ad used NLP" shit.

EVERY MAJOR WESTERN POLITICAL ORGANISATION USES NLP PRINCIPLES. ALMOST EVERY MAJOR TV COMMERCIAL USES NLP PRINCIPLES. NLP IS EVERYWHERE. RELIGIOUS CULTS USE NLP TO MAKE PEOPLE JOIN THEM.

It is abundant. And what's so wrong about using it? It's just effective communication. Get over it.

Jesus. If you haven't noticed Obama using NLP almost every time he frickin speaks then you obviously don't know very much about it.

Point out the obvious. Big deal. The sky is blue.

What do you think NLP is derived from? It is a breakdown of the best conversational techniques employed by many people before. Winston Churchill (and many many other leaders) used so many 'NLP techniques' before NLP was even created. They are just conversation skills that create the most persuasion. To some it comes natural, to others they learn it.

Creds for Plethora for the correct answer... NLP is just the result of analyzing brilliant therapists and hypnotists (Skilled persuaders and influential people, as you'll agree; Virginia Satir, Milton Erickson and I forget the last)

NLP is basically a way of mapping the things these people all did, and thus ending up with a frame through which you can inspire emotion, change attitudes etc.

Everybody tries to do this, but once you get really good at it, as every presidential candidate must be in order to be where he/she is, you pretty much end up with a few common denominators; therefore the correct answer is more or less everybody uses NLP, some covertly some overtly, some knowingly and some unconsciously, but in the end; every conversation is an attempt to get the other people to see the world the way you do, in a smaller or bigger way, and as the techniques in NLP or even Hypnosis are the most effective way, every person accepted as a "skilled" public speaker end up with at least a few techniques that are considered NLP.

True, every politician uses psychological patterns and tactics on us. There are other factors that play for Obama's usage of the very same patterns used by all our US reps. 1: Obama is a likeable person and comes off as warm to most people, not so much to me. 2: He isn't George Bush. A lot of people hate the man, but then again, I know a lot of people who don't have a clue how long it takes to have presidential programs to casue an impact. For those of you who don't know, it's about 6-10 years for major plans, so I just make those people mad when I use logical arguments to prove my point...then they make it a yelling contest when neurons fail them 3: He is black, but not the black persona that many people find annoying.

All in all, every politician uses psychology. Obama just happens to use it more effectively and at the right time...which timing is also part of NLP.
