Sounds like we have a woman with self esteem issues who is unable to extract herself from an unhappy relationship. She needs a bit of help. She wants out, just needs encouragement to build up her self esteem so she feels she can act.
Their relationship is unquestionably on the rocks and will die a natural death sooner or later. I would encourage her to stand up for herself and stop putting up with his crap. If their relationship improves then your assistance helped.
You could always tell the fella straight to his face what he is doing wrong, see how he reacts. Sounds like he totally takes her for granted. Some women happily put up with crap and I dont know why.

i managed to misread that you have been friends with him for 8 yrs...complicated.
I would let their relationship die a natural death so he can learn what an arsehole he's been when she leaves him.
