Post subject:  Field Report: Newbie Mistake: learn from it.

this is just a mistake i made today and realized it so i wanted to inform you guys not to do like i did so you won't lose a catch.

my target was walking with her friends, and i was calling a buddy of mine on my phone. his voice mail was off so it kept ringing. when u are picking up a walking target, you walk slightly ahead of them and kind of turn your head and talk to them, you DO NOT slow down your pace and stop and turn around to talk to them or they will just walk past you. so you turn your head and say something while keeping your pace, and they will naturally match yours if you open correctly.

the mistake- i was on my phone and completely forgot, while the phone kept ringing, i did my opener and the girls did not respond. i then said something else and they responded but i already fucked up. they thought i was talking to whoever it was i called. these girls followed me outta the dining hall and ECed me all dinner. DO NOT make this mistake. if you are triyng to use ur phone as a wing, that is fine but hang up before you try to start talking to a moving target or ANY target for that matter. i know this may seem common sense but what makes sense in the field alot of the time DOES NOT make sense outside of the field. hopefuilly this post will save a few of you..

What if they don't match yours (or slow down even)? Do you slow down? Do you maintain your pace? Or do you say assume fck it and move on--if they want to keep up great, if not oh well.

What is the "something else" that you said?

you want to open as if you are walking away from them, not them walking away from you. if they don't match your pace, your opener wasn't effective enough. grab their attention by tilting your head and saying something and act as though you are the chase. if you open well enough then they will simply want to talk to you and match your pace. personally, i am a slow walker and i show this constantly. i always take my time, so i know when people are walking my pace to engage in a chat. what happened with me was i already DLVed myself bc they questioned if it was them i was talking to, or the person onthe phone. awkward silence.. i then said something else and they realized i was talking to them, but by that point it was lost. first impressions suck, so you gotta get it right the first time. i lost it simply bc of my cell phone mistake.. hope this helps. -Rye
