Hi. I went out tonight to try my first openers and, although I think studying the material has helped me with my approach anxiety, I still couldn't bring myself to interrupt these girls when they were talking. I live on an island off the southern tip of South Korea and there aren't a ton of foreigners like me here. I went to this place that's a fairly popular hang-out for foreigners and I knew most of the people there. Then I saw these two girls I didn't know talking and thought I'd approach them, but when I did, they were still talking. I couldn't interrupt them and I didn't wanna stand there like some creepy idiot waiting for a chance to dive in. I backed off without saying anything to them. Now, I know you're not suppose to say "Excuse me." or anything like that, but that's the only way I'd feel comfortable interrupting them. It's like, I wanted to follow the three-second rule and approach them right away, but then I couldn't be rude and cut off whoever was talking. What do I do? |

... say excuse me... SAY it, don't ask. Walk right up, "Excuse me ladies," they will stop talking and look at you. Before they say anything continue: "I need to get this off my chest because it's driving me crazy, etc..." |

I don't think the word you use really matters. As long as you are comfortable with it and it doesn't seem contrived. If I go up to a group of females and say "Ladies" it doesn't come across as sleazy or trying to pick them up. That's because I call everyone ladies, from my nieces to my coworkers, to my mother's friends. Just call them whatever you normally call a group of women, or people. If that's guys, cool, if that's "Hey excuse me," and nothing at all do that. Just be congruent. |
