Naturally all the AFCs on my wing have done nothing with their doors. Thereby displaying no personality. I do have to hand it to them they have evolved to the point where they draw phallic symbols on their board and door. But not much beyond that.

Any ideas what I can do with my door?
To display personality?
To peacock?

Thanks

The questions you're essentially asking us are:

"What is my personality? What do I like?"

You put on your door what you like, it's not something you're doing to please other people. If you like Metallica, put up a Metallica poster. If you like spicy food, put up a tabasco poster. If you (like me) have the diabolical genius image then put up random scrawlings with some strange relevance to yourself. Whatever you want.

PS: As far as peacocking goes, the dorm room is irrelivant. People aren't going to approach you and say "Hey man, nice door!" instead the door is simply an expression of your interests. Treat it like a personality collage.

PPS: For the love of god, stay away from those goddamn biohazard symbols, nuclear waste signs and Do Not Enter signs etc, all those annoying chichés that are so overdone that they now have negative points for all those who bear them.

I agree with you when you say that you should treat it like a personality collage, but I disagree that the dorm room is irrelivant in college. Perhaps my case is different than most others, but here is how it has affected me: as a musician, my room itself is adorned in music posters and tapestries from various artists... which reflects my personality. I also have some cool lighting effects hitting the posters and a Las Vegas Sin City light that changes colors randomly [haha got it at Spencer's]. Usually when I'm in my room, I leave my door open - my dorm hallway is very social so we all kind of wander room to room and hang out before hitting the city at night. Anyways, I have had quite a few girls stop and enter my room this semester - complimenting on my setup, and they will usually say they like whatever artist too. After she opens you, you can take it from there.

Decorating your room and/or door IS a great way to show your peronality; just remember to highlight what YOU find the most interesting about yourelf and most of the time they will find it interesting too.

That is just based off of personal experience, so it may be much different at other colleges.[/i]

Thanks for the thoughtful posts guys, this is very informative an encouraging. I do agree that those cliche signs are extremely lame. I mean what does that say about your personality?

Yeah, I guess I can put up all kinds of stuff. Dragons, poems, etc... What ever is resonating with me at the time. And its not like you care about what someone else thinks, it is yours.

Anyway, thanks again guys.

Happy Sarging!

I should have phrased that better I suppose. I do, by all means support the idea of making up your dorm room so to speak, however I don't see it as peacocking per se since peacocking is simply to stand out and provoke/allow people to approach you. It would be more of a series of DHV spikes and personality advertisements (for lack of a better word), that will allow for more topics during a conversation. I, for example, have a number of martial arts weapons scattered around my room, a shelf bending its supports under the weight of a hundreds of books, a CD/DVD collection, guitar, camping equipment, etc. all in clear view as soon as one enters my room but it isn't peacocking since I don't call attention to it (I don't invite people into my room and say "Hey, look at all this cool shit.")

Simply put: Yes, a dorm room/bedroom is great for prtraying your personality but as with anything of such nature, don't verbally call attention to it as it loses a lot of value when you do so (you're basically calling yourself out as a poser by doing this). Much like the theory of negs being thrown like pebbles, you don't look to see where/if it lands, rather you throw and turn away; similarly with a DHV spike you don't say "Yeah I came here in a limo tonight" rather you fit it into a story "So we were on our way here and the limo driver was the craziest driver I've ever seen."

Think of it more as some stuff lying around as opposed to thinking "Yeah this is my epic domain of win, look at it go."

I hope all this makes sense, at 4am it's difficult to tell if my analogies are sufficient.

I see where Stygian is coming from. I wouldn't call attention to it either, but let it subtley be present. It's also not the most important thing to be focused on when trying to show off your personality.

Exactly. It's simply a subtle hint as to what you're like. If you want to display your personality most effectively however you know what you should be doing?

Our survey says: talking to people

I think most of the work is done for you already if they are at your door so you should put something on it which will get their interest and lead to a "oh that I picked that up when I was ...... " conversation.

This might be lame....
How about something for your guests to sign and offer comments.... And request updates on your music and where it can be heard/purchased...? It might lead to number closes on some interesting ladies.
Just outta curiosity, What kinda music are you into?
