There are a number of possibilities why she is like this around you but not other people.

She feels intimidated by you because she sees you of high value

She feels uncomfortable around you because you're coming on too strong

You aren't contributing enough to the conversation and that you're misinterpreting shyness for awkward silences

She is attracted to you and doesn't want to appear to be a slut in your colleague's eyes by giving them anything that could be interpreted as flirting.

You are the only person that can know for sure, as long as it is nothing on your end causing her to be quiet then I would say it's a good thing.

Hi There is this girl at work who I must admit I quite fancy. though have never given her signs or anything. She always acts real shy around me - when we are in company anyway. But if we are on our own then she is quite chatty. Does this mean she fancies me? Or what does it mean? Seems there is some tension there. DS

I believe it's a good thing, it means that she see's you socially higher on the ladder or finds you attractive, but those mostly come together. Just try to put yourself in her situation and you'll see whats going on. When it's just the two of you, mostly you already spent some time around each other that day, and shyness fades over time.

I would agree, I think the question you should be asking is do you want to date her? Doesn't matter if your going to fail nor accomplish but that you make a decision if your going to or not. It could be a number of things, but still do something about it if you like her, don't just examine and see if you actually act on it or sit back and forget about it, what do you choose?
