Post subject:  Getting around in a foreign country

I'm currently in Paris for a 2 month business venture.
I'll meet my co-workers tomorrow, and they've promised to show me around the city, but I'm rather young compared to everyone else working there, and I would like to meet some people of my own age.

The problem is that I've only just gotten over my approach anxiety in the Netherlands, and I'm now in a country where they speak a language I only know very basic words in. Normally I'd try English, but the french are known for not speaking too much english.

I've already planned to go out and find some irish or otherwise international pubs, but I was hoping some other people would have some tips on how to build up a little social network from scratch :P

Thanks

open a set with a joke opener, and just throw in a few stories. it should just come to where you get a few friends. u mentioned co-workers, well they are friends and if they show you around that usually means introductions to friends and all that jazz.

Ok,

Search the net and check for any ex-pat groups in that area. Second best are the irish pubs. Apart from that, universities.
French people are generally bad in english but learn a few (5-10) words in french and thell be impressed and feel bad for not speaking better english. You made an effort to learn french right... ;)
They are good in non verbal communication so play your bodylanguage. Do not forget to:
- Move slowly
- Confident smile
- Have fun with your friends
- No needyness
- Flashgame (google it)
- Be the alpha male but friendly
- Laugh a lot
- Eyecontact

I got some IOIs and game from girls who did not speak more than a few sentences of english using this stuff.
BTW, if you find something out tell me, Im trying to develop a non verbal form of the game. It has to be possible!
