Online is tough; guys have a lot more confidence so it's not enough to just try to say that you think they're attractive and want to meet them. Although I don't agree with using anything less than direct in most cases, in this case use an opinion opener in this case because online is the one place you need plausible deniability; you need an excuse to talk to her or else she will say as you can't really sperate yourself from an AFC through text (body language/confidence don't show online) and she will as you said wonder why you are talking to her.
Engage them on an emotional level; turn your conversation into a soap opera filled with elements of drama. Women love drama which is why openers like jealous girlfriend will get women talking.
