Post subject:  How to move up in the world

Here's a simple situation: I really want to boost my human experience. And live life. I want to travel, have an exotic and high value life. Be a man of the world and not let my best days past before my eyes - asking myself when I'm old "Why didn't I do it." We on the same page?

Here's the important question: what type of work would allow me to produce enough income or give me the time to do that. I really want to figure out this whole financial thing. Look, I know there's a lot of crap out there but I'm talking about stuff that works. I can do anything I apply myself to.

I'm in the military. Get paid well. Travel the world for free. Not all trips are great, but most are awesome. The military has sent me to some pretty amazing places with amazing ladies.

I'm a software developer.

Great money, great work environment, 20-something age average and contrary to what most people believe (and was probably true in the 90s), about half the employees are gorgeous women.

Lots of free business trips all around the world if you're up for it.

Deleting all the excess blather to simply state,

Start your own business.

Start your own business flying all over the country firing people.

Like in that George Clooney movie "Up in the Air"

I was a lil over the top in some of my replies including the one above and the one I am deleting here. I do however stand by my recommendation to start your own biz.

Few point on this.
Chances of you starting a successful business will exponentially grow once you've actually attained some working experience in your target domain. You'll learn the ways of the trade, best practices, workflows, and get a glimpse of what works and what doesn't.

Secondly, the first several months or even few years, depending on your selected primary activity are investment years. If you're ridiculously lucky (and I do mean luck, because no matter how good you are, you're literally a no-name) you'll land a client from the get go, so maybe your fledgling business will earn just enough to self-sustain investments in order to prosper. However you can't possibly consider that a realistic outcome. Following the same logic you don't buy a Lambo right after getting a lottery ticket because maybe it wins.

Third, you too have to survive. Best case scenario your business makes money from day one. You still need a personal income. If you think leeching money from your barely profitable luckstrike company will be enough to pay your rent, you're wrong. And even if it were, doing so will severely inhibits it's growth and put it in danger of dying out.

Starting a business has little to do with balls and a lot to do with being smart and adaptive.
It's similar to "getting women". The more desperate you are, the better you chances of failing. You're still dealing mostly with people and if every client is your life vest, it won't be long before you drown.

You can do this if you have more balls than most.

When you want to make something positive happen you fucking do so, in any area of life.

A'right man, whatever. If you think balls are what you need to run a business it becomes apparent there's no point discussing this further.

The woman or man who steps out from a comfy corporate existence to start something that has a completely unsure future has balls ......of steel.

It requires a hell of a lot more than that to also succeed.

In case the OP needs more clarity, my prescription is most definitely not the easy route.

R.C. knows his shit; read his posts again.

You need balls to take calculated risks, but that's pretty much where it ends. A business is much more than that.

A business is about providing value, making a difference, and continously innovating to stay relevant in your market. Unless you have something useful to provide, your company is worthless. This is why "be your own boss and start a business" is a tantalizing notion -- many people do not have the knowledge or means to do something really useful.

What change would you like to make in the world? How will you get it started -- will you bootstrap it with your own money, find angel investors, join accelerators, seek venture capital, etc? Having been working on my own business, it's not what you think it is -- the first few years will brutally test your limits.

You're a bass player. Igor plays guitar, sells his music on the internet, and earns money from advertisements.

No job is going to be fulfilling just because its paying you a lot of money.

I'm 100% with what R.C. however he already has a headstart with his social experience. He can find a lot more happiness with a job paying good money because he's already figured out how to make friends, get laid, and have favor within the social circles he operates in.

A man without that isn't going to be happy just because he has a job paying good money. Pick a good job man, everyone needs money to survive, but make your priority to get you mental shit worked out first, or you'll have lots of money and no one to share it with or enjoy lifes experiences with.
