Post subject:  Using Americanisms as a Brit

Hey all,

I'm the kind of person that thinks A LOT about his general mannerisms, including everything from voice/tonality through to body language, personal habits and common expressions. One thing that gets me is that when I'm in a particularly expressive mood I find myself saying all kinds of Americanisms that I generally try to restrain myself from using, these include

- yo
- ass / booty / junk in the trunk (rather than arse)
- dude
- s'up?
- man (as in like, "hey man")
- guy
- like (as in like, "as in like" lol)

My question is: what kind of effect this unintentional usage has on my personal charisma, since I don't like to give off the vibe that I am uncomfortable with using my own national identity and local idioms instead. It's kind of hard not to do it though, since these Americanisms seem to be in all kinds of commercial aspects, even in the UK.

Thanks.

I think theyre fine to be honest, I use dude, man, guys, s'up all the time and it fits with my personality. I think because alot of our popular culture these days is from the states, words and phrases like that are generally understood and accepted. The only thing you should maybe avoid using is actual american words for things, for example saying 'chips' instead of crisps (i know you probably wont do that but just an extreme example) or using american sport terms and references, because they might seem a bit in-congruent or even too foreign for people to understand (although american football seems to be growing in popularity so maybe one day!)

So yeh, I think a lot of those you listed are fine, although, it might just be me but id never say 'booty' in front of a girl or even anyone, that i think is a bit too american/african american slang and does sound out of place when i hear british guys say it. unless used ironically of course. Also, just a thought on 'like', i assume your talking about using it as a filler (like 'umm, err') or how you see american girls on tele using it "and I was like totally like oh my god!", I would avoid that, because its really used as a hesitation in speech, when youre trying to think of what to say and that you are unsure of yourself. Do you ever see politicians saying um, err or like, when theyre speaking? It is perfectly natural of course, but if youre speaking slowly and are confident in what youre saying you shouldnt need to use it.

It doesn't matter what you say man, its all about HOW you say it.

You can say " Fuck you" to a girl and get a positive response and/or say "fuck you" and get a negative response. Its all depending on how you say it and the context of the situation you say it in.

You're worrying about fine little details and disregarding the big picture.

I just talk man. I love my voice, and I'm comfortable with myself. I say what I want generally, unless i'm doing business. Thats the only time you should curb your words.

Good to know: I just hate being perceived as trying to be American or something. And yes, I do sometimes catch myself saying 'like' / 'ummm' / 'uhh' / 'ahh' as filler, words but then, I think we all need filler words from time to time! The important thing is that you DON'T trail off when you start using these words: you've got to simply keep driving through and make sure you say what it is you want to say, even if it takes you a bit longer than what makes you feel comfortable. Swearing constantly can mess me up but then as long as it's just around mates and not too often, I guess it's ok. One thing I really hate doing is apologising. That's just the worst.

And saying thanks all the time when you don't really need to ... Well, thanks for the input GUYS! Adios.
