Post subject:  Unattractive Career
I'm a software engineer (surprisingly, outgoing and into real world things) but always seem to hit a dead end while sarging and a HB asks what I do for a living. I've tried using similar occupations (computer programmer, developer, systems engineer, etc...), but they all seem to [not surprisingly] be a turn off. With female friends, it seems to be an extreme DHV because of my personality (witty, funny, and sometimes charming) and because of what I do, they see me as a smart person who makes good money and a good source when they have computer related problems. It also gives me good material to joke about myself, demonstrating confidence and that I don't take myself too seriously.
When it comes to meeting new women, should i make up a joke occupation and deflect the question like it was suggested in previous posts or is there a way I can use my real occupation as a DHV like I do with girls I already know? What if the new HBs are insistent in knowing what I do for a living?

Definitely joke about it at first. A couple of times. Then, if they are insistent, get a serious look on your face and tell them they have to earn that answer, and they haven't earned it yet. You've put them directly into qualifying themselves. It's up to you how much they have to qualify to earn that particular answer. And, you could even bring one of your female friends into the picture, either in person or by phone, and have her to tell the new girl what you do, since they seem to appreciate what you do. That will DHV you and show preselection.

Your a 'software engineer'? Do you say it like that? I get the sense that you say it with the expectation that they are not going to like it.

Do you do software for a interesting company? Do the applications do interesting things?

There is nothing wrong with being a software engineer but YOU need to be excited about it.

Girl: So what do you do
You: I am a software engineer

Real boring........

Girl: So what do you do.
You: Ever hear of a cell phone?
Girl: Of course
You: You like the way that your able to have text messages?
Girl: I use them all of the time
You: I make that happen

There are an infinate amount of opportunities with this. Relate it back to something she is familiar with. This applies to any job someone does.

Concur with L.A. though, perfect opportunity to be playfull with them first.
Be carefull with the earning it part. It can be abrasive. Instead of just saying it, play a game with them to get the answer.

I have this memorized, and repeat it to myself whenever i think someone is looking down on me or when i feel like i have DLV'd.

They are unimpressed with the presentation, and delivery of the information...not the info itself.

I mean for the most part the job doesnt matter, and really they dont care, they are just doing the "normal" social thing and asking because they feel they should. Aside from being a rock star or something your job isnt really the DHV, its how you describe it.

Like LA said dont give it to them right away, be C&F in your first few responses, sometimes they will just stop asking and other times you may wana give them the truth if they earn it.

Also i like giving the truth about my mundane details in the form of short stories, or not so short stories....this often times makes you more intresting.

When I wing with Johnny and he intros me, he never says,
"This is Brian, he's an architect."

He'll say something like, "You should meet Brian. He designs
medical offices." (just an example)

No matter what you do, whether it be a mortgage broker or a
porn star, never just state your job. Tell her about it. Just don't
go into monologue when doing it. :) You can make anything sound
interesting.

As a matter of fact, everything is interesting... or at least has
interesting things about it.

yea, poking fun is a good aproach. considering that engineering is made up almost completely of males, percentage wise, which are perceived as dorky. i would go with an answer like "my profession is where u will find all of the most drop dead gorgeous women u will ever lay eyes on" say it with a serious face. then she will be extremaly curious and ask u what profession is that, and then u hit em with "computer engineer" with a C&f tone.

This is true. I don't work for a well known company, but everybody i meet uses computers, so I can use that to my advantage.
I'll try making a game out of it (as early as tonight if it comes up) and then report my results. Thanks guys.

Man I got a major in CS and I know what you mean stick a 100% with what have been already said as a side note I give you a plus most of us Computer /Software/Networks... professionals are crazy for what we do I mean we like it don't we? So use it as your fact, tease the girl say for example you work in the most profitable work field there is ;)

So this weekend, I tried out the advice that I got from you guys. Unfortunately, I got really smashed and don't remember too well. (Not a good idea). But my wing man filled me in and apparently, I played around with her and had a few laughs about it.
So she asked what I did for a living and i responded by saying I work on the internet. She giggled a bit and i played with that a bit more. Eventually, the topic came up again and instead of giving my title, I asked her if she's heard of facebook. And little by little, I tied my career with things she was familiar with. Needless to say, I number closed that night and found a new friend. Thanks for the advice guys.

And, THAT'S why we tell guys REPEATEDLY . . . DO . . . NOT . . . GET . . . DRUNK (preferrably don't drink AT ALL) WHILE PICKING UP.

You really don't need those drinks to open up. It just hinders you. Period.
