Okay, So i have been listening to some DeAngelo material and thus far I have nothing but nice things to say about it. I'd recommend checking it out (PM me and I'll tell you where to get it). Anyway, the piece of advice i want to focus on is that he says, Quote: Never laugh at your own joke in an attempt to make her laugh
Of course right, when you hear it stated it sounds so obvious. Who would EVER attempt this. That's what i thought too, but DeAngelo mentions that this is a very widespread problem and asks you to keep an eye out for it in yourself. So I did and I'll be damned, but I WAS doing it. TONs of people are. It's generally a very casual laugh and goes unnoticed. It often works, but not always. I'm not trying to suggest that after a joke is made I, or others, break into wild bout of laughter but rather after a joke is made it seems quite normal for the joke teller to finish with a chuckle thus signifying a joke had been told and would everyone please laugh. I dont have any good concluding remarks after making this observation, but I think DeAngelo is right to caution against this. You come off as MUCH better / more alpha / funnier / more attractive, when you DONT laugh at all at your own jokes. Instead of using a chuckle to try and initiate laughter, use a line instead "That was a joke, you're supposed to laugh now." or something similar (DeAngelo's line is "How about a courtesy laugh" ) Anyone have a few thoughts on this subject? |

Interesting. I'll keep an eye out for it while I moniter my every day speech to cut out "uhs" and "likes". |

It depends a lot on the joke and such because if it isn't a good joke you can force a laugh out after it and others will look at you as if you are just trying to make them laugh even though you and them both know it isn't funny. I would suggest trying the jokes out without laughing and with laughing. Compare the differences and choose the best response for each joke. |
