Hopefully there aren't any magicians here that mind me sharing this so I apologize in advance... It's done with "invisible" thread that you can pick up at your local magic shop. If there are none near you, you can buy a pair of pantyhose and unthread them, taking only one strand of it. That can be a bit more risky though. The "invisible" thread is waaay thinner than a hair and it looks good decently close up too. You just have to watch for certain lightings. As far as performance goes, you can really do anything you want. Most of the time, you would have "magician's wax" or dental wax on both ends of the thread. One end is usually stuck in a place like behind and over your less dominant side's ear so you can have your dominant hand control it. The other end of the thread can be placed behind your dominant thumb's nail for later use or stuck on your belt buckle (I prefer buckle). Then you can borrow a cigarette and as a person gets it out you subtly place the thread/wax between your dominant hand's thumb and index. Take the cigarette with your empty hand and pass it to your hand with the thread/wax, placing the wax in the center of the cigarette. The wax blob shouldn't be very much and it's practically see through so no worries. In order to control the floating cigarette, you should have the thread running from behind and over your ear diagonally and down to the webbing between your dominant hands thumb and index. Then move your hand away from you to make the cigarette go up and toward you to make the cigarette go down.
