It's the morning after the night before, my tongue is fuzzy, my head pumping, and scrawled across my arm is the name of a song, a bar, a barmaid, and no number. Let me explain. I went out with a couple of friends for one or two drinks after an exam, before we all went our separate ways for the evening. In the bar we go to is a pretty barmaid who I've never seen in there before. I'm buying drinks, and I order a drink she has never heard of (this is a great conversation starter with barmaids). After tasting it I tell her it's not bad for a first effort - but it needs more work. My friends and I are having fun, chilling, so we decide to stay a little later. I catch smiles from the barmaid through the evening - we chat every time I go to the bar. It gets later, and we move inside to the bar. Chatting away with other people around, laughing, all good fun. A song comes on, and somehow I get her to write the name of the song on my arm. She then adds the name of the bar. I tell her all great artists sign their work. She writes her name. I say: "You know, I might have some complaints about the quality of the work, add your number." She laughs: "Very smooth", but adds "my bf wouldn't like that" (I'm thinking, yeah right, you don't have a bf). Me: "It's ok, I won't tell him". Her: "No, I'm not sure I should". It's all in good humour, I change the subject, everyone is having fun. It gets to closing time, my friend and I are the last to leave - after pretending to help clean up. As we leave, the barmaid takes my friend's bike wheel while he goes to pick up his bike. I chase her: "Mate, I'm catching the thief....!" Light kino ensues. I ask when she is next working. She tells me. At the end of the road, I'm going right, she is going left. I get a hug and a continental kiss. I go home. Firstly, my apologies for the length. Secondly, was I right in going for the number-close? And why didn't I get it? And finally, why the hug me and the continental (she initiated) considering I only spoke to her for the first time a couple of hours before? |

I've found the best way to number close is after as kiss-close. No shit! cos by then it's a formality. I think your attempt at NC was too smooth. Like the whole drawing on your hand, she would have realised what you were doing. When you get the number you wanna be serious. 'Listen, I think you're kinda cool,we should hang out some time, can I get your number.' |
