| Post subject: | Froze Up After IOI's, Kicking Myself. Help! |
I've got this huge report due in a few weeks, so I decided I'd head to Starbucks to work on the report and attempt to sarge. As soon as I got in, the place was packed, there was only 1 table left in the corner so I had to take it. There were no HB's in sight, so I just dug right into my report. When i took a bathroom break I walked across a few tables and noticed a HB 8. We couldn't see each other from our tables so I was debating changing tables but I decided that it wasn't worth it. An hour or so went by and most of the people in the place cleared out and I saw that she was getting a bottle of water. When i looked up again we made eye contact and I was positive she was giving me IOI's. I haven't approached anyone in a coffee shop so I decided to go back to the report. Within a few minutes, she picks up her laptop and books and sits DIRECTLY in front of me. So close that the plug to my laptop is under her table. We made eye contact a few times and I was trying to think of a way I could spark up conversation. I decided that an easy opener was, "Could you do me a favour, *pause* could you unplug me?" After I ran this opener she was like "Sure!" but I just froze out, I didn't have the confidence to say anything else. I'm kicking myself right now, I know I could have got her number. Can anyone give me a few tips? or share some similar stories? I'm going to go back there every night this week to try to finish the report, so there's a chance she might be there. Any ideas for an opener? Thanks, TeeDub |

If you freeze up, you can buy yourself a little time by doing a quick pre-frame, i.e. set up your next question with a little throwaway line like "I don't wanna be weird or anything, but..." or "I know this might be kind of a random thing to say, but..." Then you can do questions-as-statements to get info out of her in a more fun way than normal. For example, instead of "what are you working on?" you can say "I guess you've got some serious 20 page essay to write or something...but I bet if you open up you computer right now you're on facebook and gmail, right?" Then she might laugh and you can talk about procrastinating or something, or she might tell you what work she's doing, and you can say something like "oh you're one of THOSE girls" (can be used in almost any situation as a response to ANYTHING) or "you hang out in the library a lot...I can tell." Again, the point is you're making statements about her, which don't have to be right or wrong. They're just kind of teasing her a bit, getting her to tell you about herself, and making her wonder "why did he think I'm a library nerd?" If you really can't think of anything, then still just try to continue the interaction. If a girl likes you, then you can get away with a bunch of interview style questions and you may hit upon something that generates a good conversation. |

Thanks man, that helps alot. I'm always in situations like that, so I'll be sure to use those. I think the biggest thing for me is practice, the day game is much more intimidating. I've have had success with the ladies but it always involves alcohol. I gotta man up!

Hmm since she moved towards you, maybe you could've said something like "So, I see you decided to invade my space?" but say it jokingly. And then you could add something like "I'm really busy and find you to be quite the distraction." Again completley joking. What do you think about that? |
