Post subject:  approaching fast moving target + opener

Ok, I'm very new to all this but canned openers make me feel uncomfortable so for now I'm trying to approach naturally, just to get rid of anxiety. I just try to talk to people wherever I go with no intentions of picking anybody up just yet.

Well, last night I was going to my friends house so I stopped by grocery store to grab some beer. I saw this HB getting a bottle of wine, and as we were approaching the register I came up with an opener, something like:
"Oh, you already got the wine? I felt more like beer tonight but I guess the wine will be just fine"
Later I realized that maybe her boyfriend was waiting in a car while she was getting the wine for romantic dinner, but as I said, I'm not trying to pick up a girl, just practicing :D

I never got chance to talk to her because she was moving fast like a squirrel in "over the hedge"! We approached the register in the same time but as I tried to make an eye contact she obviously forgot to buy something, turned around and walked away!

I think trying to intercept her would be too intrusive and unnatural. What should I have done in this situation? Also, before opening a target is it necessary to make an eye contact first? What if a girl just glances in your direction?

Yeah I just hate it whenever a girl "over the hedges" me. Well actually I'm not sure what you mean by that (I saw the movie).
What exactly was her reaction to your opener? Did she run away?

Tell me a bit more about her reaction and I might be able to help.

Oh and by the way: Great opener! I'm going to use that sometime:P

Thanks, I thought it would be a great opener, very natural.

By "over the hedge" I meant the person who just won't stay in one place more than split second. I had no time to open her or even establish eye contact because she was moving too fast! She just glanced as she walked away from the register, I guess she realized that she forgot to buy something and decided to go back.

I missed the chance but I still have a lot to learn. So I was wondering, in this scenario, a girl at the register, I'm behind her, should I try to open her regardless of eye contact or I should try to get the eye contact first?
