| Post subject: | A PUA's worst nightmare... Headphones! |
I run my own pick up company named GetmetheGirl in Bristol. And even though day in day out a practice this stuff, there is always room for improvement. One thing that has always stumped me (probably because i have just moved on to the next girl without thinking) is how to approach a girl in the day with headphones in? I mean I've always been one for having a 'forget all excuses, just do it' approaching in whatever situation; and i have approached girls with headphones before. Usually i have started my approach like usual, but the approach has slightly stalled whilst they take their headphones out and ask me to repeat myself. There must be a smoother way to do it! Anybody thought about this in detail? Or practiced? Kind Regards, Jamie Cole Senior Coach Get me the Girl |

What I once did was quite simple and effective.. I just walked to her, waved my head in front of her, she saw me, took her headphones... put them on my head. looked at her being quite blown away "wtf-faced"... Then I gave them back, "you like being isolated?" and started a conversation. Worked pretty well... you can of course also talk about the music etc etc. |

Approaching girls with head phones on, is really the same as without. You said it yourself already: "just do it". I say a loud "Hey!" and point at them at waist level. This will get their attention. If not, follow with a slight tap on her shoulder and begin rapping as usual. |

Gestures! First you must get her attention. If she's walking towards you, put your hand out gesturing for her to stop. If sitting or standing, nonchalantly tap her shoulder. Next, while making eye contact, act as if you are taking invisible headphones out of your ears..once she gets the message, start your opener as if she never had them in her ears in the first place. I like to think of headphones as a communicative barrier just as any other communicative barrier. ex. If you're trying to get a message across to someone who speaks a different language, and the barrier doesn't bother you, there is less likely a chance that it will bother them. By doing this, you are projecting confident body language, thus making them more comfortable around you. Diamond Smith |

I think an even bigger obstacle is someone talking on the phone... people might be willing to remove their headphones to talk to a stranger, but it's increasingly doubtful they'll let you interrupt their phone conversation. So I wont do anything or just wait until they're done... assuming I don't have to wait too long. I've opened people texting or looking at their phone before, though, just showing some social intelligence by saying "Excuse me, I don't mean to interrupt you there" and opening as usual. |
