I came over with my lunch and said "Mind if I join you?" and that's when she picked up her open mobile and said "Sorry I just got a text from my dad - he's in hospital."

What are some light hearted things you might say if she said this to you?

I said "Oh geez, that's pretty serious" and she mumbled something, half smiling - I said "pardon?" and she elaborated - I can't remember, I just said "Well, best wishes!" and said goodbye, she didn't even say goodbye.

I think I should have played with it a bit further till I was sure she was telling the truth and not blowing me off. I just thought of "Gee, I haven't heard that one before!" but that might be too agressive.

If you havent talked to this girl before, and she doesnt know you in anyway
I think there is a socialboundary not to be stept over.

Dont get to personal. Cause you've never met her dad.
Dont act as if you did.
You never talked to her before, dont talk to her as you know her. Cause you dont.

Simply say:
That dont sound to good.

If you seems willing to talk keep talking to her.
- Is there something I can do? How serious is it? Can I give you a ride to the hospital? Do you need someone to talk to etc..

If not.
-Let me know if there's anything I can do.
Walk away.

Then you can ask her later how everything has worked out.

You dont want to game a girl whoes dad is in the Hospital. She is not in the frame of mind to get picked up or find a boyfriend or a f-buddy. What the hell were you thinking. Just say 'sorry to hear that' and move on.

Yeah that's what I did - my real issue here is that I wasn't sure if it was a blow-off or not, and how to find out. I couldn't think of what to say to do this...

I'd say it was a blow-off. I mean think about it, just at that particular moment that you approach her, she opens her phone and says that? Sure it MAY be true but honestly I think she just didn't want to talk at that moment.

Her phone was already open, she just picked it up to emphasise her statement, so I can't be sure.

Just wondering if anyone has some examples of what they'd say in that situation.

I think your best off if you move on with your life.
It sounds like you have oneitis.
You may want to GFTOW. A common prescription for oneitis.

From what I read I doubt he's got "oneitis". He just sounded interested in the person and wanted to know what was going on with her because of that text.

I think your opening is the basicproblem here. You gave her the choice to blow you off.. After that I wouldn't try to escalate things if she's showing desinterest by telling you that her dad is in the hospital.. You never know it's true. It would be weird.. so I guess she did a good job ;)

There were three ways to respond to "mind if I join you?":

- Yes
- No
- mwoah.. rather not by saying: My dad is in the hospital or my cavia died this morning..

I think things could've gone different if you walked by her asking for her opinion about the food or whatever.

"Your dad knows how to text?! Can you have him teach my dad?"

Kidding, of course.

Thanks fratss and arek :D that is the kind of stuff I was looking for!

arek that's a great idea, I will work on that frame of mind for that kind of humour. I reckon I can do it, just have to remember to.

fratss, I think I will work on when to be direct. I agree now it would have been better to ask her something first in that situation.

Whereas today I just read a checkout girl's name tag, gave a cheeky smile (thinking like I know her and know that she's up for a good time) and said "How are you going today [name]?" and got a great reaction. She seemed really eager to talk after that. Different situation of course. Didn't number close because I didn't have any sort of plan to... but I felt like I could have.
