I loved this one because my friends put me on the spot. A Columbian HB8 is sitting with 3 females (all of whom look like they wouldn't need a costume in a Star Wars movie). After a month of listening to Ray bragging about his "superior game" I dare him to get her number. Ray gives excuses and doesn't get up to approach her. My friend Matt calls us a bunch of pussies. It's on now. I grab Matt, who happens to be wearing jeans, boots, a button down, and a wrinkly sports jacket (but is a phenomenal conversationalist) and pull him over to the set. "This is my good friend Matt.....he's running for mayor.......we're shaking hands" They giggle and shake Matt's hand. I thank them and tell them it's important to have a young reformist mayor with dreads and a wrinkly jacket in office (and in Jersey City...that's actually true). They laugh and we are immediately having fun. Sticking to basics, I time constraint and tell them we are very busy on the campaign trail and need to hit many more bars and McDonald's before the night is over, but I have a question. For the sake of fund raising for our campaign, and an actual non-profit I'm a part of, what are some good party drinks I can serve instead of the usual Sangria? Party, food, lifestyle opinion questions are great. They are fun but lead to personal preference discussion. Disagree with a drink idea she has and tell her about a drink that's very different and tastes better. It will spark a fun debate. You can lead into wanting to try their ideas out another time. If the group agrees you can get everyone's email/# which keeps the group and HB off guard. As I'm doing this I'm not paying any attention to HB8. I'm holding conversation, smiling, and keeping eye contact with her friends. HB8 goes to the bathroom and Matt steals her seat. The sly bastard beat me by seconds! Always steal a seat when possible. It will either lead to a confrontation or she will be stuck standing outside the circle. You can then engage her and bring her back into the group, putting you in control. I grab another chair and sit at the table with everyone. Matt gets up before she returns, which he should not have done. She returns, I smile at her, and turn right back to her friends. I'm mainly speaking with the one motor-mouth in the group. I use that to include the entire group. "You have lots of great ideas. I want to hear what everyone thinks. What's a good drink for a party?" I go around the table and go to HB8 last who is now on my immediate right. She works in a restaurant and has lots to say about the subject luckily. I turn facing just her, as I had been with everyone, and start to disagree with her choices and challenging her tastes. She is laughing and enjoys a debate about beverages. I continue into food. "Food says more about a person than drinks. It tells your history, what your ancestry is, where you've lived in your life, etc." She is all over that, telling me where she is from, her favorite foods, etc. We jumped to a deeper conversation quickly, Her friends are not on guard because Matt and I built repoire and paid attention to everyone. We are deep in conversation so her friends turn away and go on with their nights. I'm now free to isolate and continue to escalate. Her friends decide to leave and she has to follow. I get her number and more importantly show up Ray. |
