Breaking Free Of Your Tormentor I didn’t want to put this on paper. I know this is a strange way to begin a blog post but it’s the God’s honest truth. Why? Because this won’t help. I want to be absolutely clear here… I am no guru, no god and no enlightened guy… I’m a warrior monk, a samurai, a wanderer, a vagabond, a rogue and a philosopher… But I’m also none of these things. Confused? Good. Too Many Mind. You have a disease. And so do I. In fact this disease is so widespread that it’s considered normal. I was sitting on the bus last week on my way downtown to meet a friend I had not seen in 6 months. And I drifted into a very lively daydream of us being reunited. I thought of all the jokes, all the good times and I found myself mouthing the jokes and giggling to myself. I realized just how crazy I must have looked to the other passengers on the bus… But really, how different is this from what we’re always doing internally? It’s not. This disease is called the Mind. Or worse still, The Tormentor. Say Hello To Your Tormentor “I have seen all there is to see under the sun and behold… all is vanity and striving after wind” – The Holy Bible We all have this voice inside our heads that chatters on interminably. It just goes on and on and on and on. But you know what? Your tormentor is not you. And it’s actually incredibly easy to prove that. Can you stop it? Go ahead and try. I’ll wait… Yeah didn’t think so. This tormentor is responsible for feeding you the lies you’ve clung onto your entire life. This includes your failures, your faults, your flaws, your insecurities and every reason as to why you are not good enough. You see, what we actually are is addicted to our tormentor. It’s the reason we are perpetually unhappy. This tormentor wants something always, constantly. It is perpetually self-seeking, and never satisfied. It spoils the beauty of this very moment by judging it through the lens of the past. It tightens it’s grip on you by promising a future that doesn’t exist… And thus it feeds itself. How To Break Free “When consciousness is unified however, all vain anxiety is left behind” – Bhagavad Gita One of my favourite modern spiritual teachers is Sri Ramana Maharshi. And he was absolutely famous for his particular style of teaching; Silence. He had all kinds of spiritual seekers that would travel from all over the world to see him, to beg for his advice and guidance and yet he always responded with silence. He held space with them, he let them exhaust themselves with questions and anguish and despair and depression and sorrow and confusion until there was just nothing left to ask… And then… They understood. The moment you recognize the voice inside your head as your tormentor, that is the moment you begin to break free from him. You don’t have to fight your tormentor – you fight mind with more mind. All you ever have to do is laugh at him. Know that the constant stream of thought is not you and it will cease to be a burden. Your sense of self, your sense of identity, everything you feel you do not deserve is rubbish – it’s a story on repeat since the day you were born until the day you die. But to know that it is not you is liberation. That is ultimately the role of a coach… To put you through the mill, to make you run on the hamster wheel until you’re nice and exhausted, and then to point you inward so that there is nothing left but to face yourself. It’s to play with this voice in your head so much that you finally just drop this story of ‘poor little me’. “And afterwards, when all is said and done, you realize… ‘I am, that I am…’ which is the name of God”. – Alan Watts Breathe, relax, be. Sincerely your biggest fan, Pat Ananda |

Indeed, our subconscious knows best and all too often we fall victim to our Analysis Paralysis. This is why the 3-second rule was invented and why it's so important to follow, because we have to act before our enemy (our conscious analytical mind). Another great book related to this is 'Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking' by Malcom Gladwell. It basically talks about why our intuition, hunches, and snap-second judgements are often more effective and accurate than hard critical analysis. |
