Post subject:  Christmas Opener(s)

Hey guys.

So, whilst I was at work today I saw an email pinned up looking for staff to take part in a Christmas toy appeal, for children living in poverty in our region. The idea is you choose a child to sponsor from their first name and age and then buy them a Christmas gift. It's for a good cause, so, why the hell not!

Anyways, whilst I was working away I thought this could make a decent opinion opener - a different take on the classic "cashmere sweater" opener if you will.

Something along the lines of:
Quote:
"Hey guys, let me get your opinion on something. My friend has chosen to take part in a gift-giving scheme for underprivileged children this Christmas. He's looking for a gift for a girl called X, who is X years old but he's stuck for ideas. What would you have wanted for Christmas when you were that age?"
What are your thoughts on this?

Also, what festive openers do you tend to use around Christmas?

DV.

Why not just be the friend? Really? It tells a lot about your character, that you are charitable.

yes, I forgot to put that in the original post. Could work both ways.

May also be a good opener for daygame?

I love blaming girls for trying to cross paths with me under the mistletoe. :-)

Another fool proof one is saying something like, “you know, for some reason I always get super slutty around the holidays. Like the past 5 major holidays I’ve slept with a cute girl, but not this time. I’m gonna be a good boy this year, so don’t get any ideas (insert contestant name here)...”

Or you can take a more direct opener like, “So what did you ask for for christmas?” She’ll say something, doesn’t matter what. Then you respond with, “Yea, I decided I was going to be a little more selfless this year. So I just asked Santa for a copy of the naughty list...”

Try em out beast.

I kinda find that opener to be a little... too descriptive and unbelievable, actually.

Like screaming: LOOK - UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN!

Shorten it, and make yourself the friend - good advice from the other poster.

Something like:

So listen, I'm taking part in this Christmas giving program and I've got to buy for a little girl. She's 9. I'm clueless with this shit - what are some decent gift ideas?

yeah, I hear ya. Shorten it down, of course, and it will allow you to make your point a lot quicker and not overload them with information. My intention was to make reference in the original post re making it about yourself rather than a friend but it completely slipped my mind when writing it.

Not sure about the unbelievability part? I guess if you mean it's more unbelievable making it about "a friend" rather than yourself I can see the reason behind this, but I imagine this sort of event happens all the time, not just at Christmas, so it shouldn't be too unbelievable, right?

Appreciate the comments guys - some other good openers already suggested, love them! Keep 'em coming.

I wouldn't analyze this opener too much, mainly because it's actually true.
Who would lie about donating to undeprileged kids anyways?

But this opener is original, because it's simply true. And you're also honestly trying to get an
opinion from a girl. It's a lot different than those "Hey who do you think lies more dogs or cats..."

So I wouldn't spend too much time analyzing it. If you think about it too much, you'll ruin the
spontaniety of it. Go with it.
