Post subject:  help with social circle

Hey guys. I completed my degree a couple of years ago and am back at uni to do a few papers for post grad. Problem is most of the people in my class are all friends and are in groups and I want to increase my social circle in order to make new friends and hopefully meet hb. How would you do this? Wouldnt it be weird to start a conversation with a group of friends in class? People seem to keep to themselves. I was thinking of giving free advice to people at the gym ( im a pt at a different gym) but dont know how I would go about making friends etc. Any tips would be awesome. Btw there's only like 10min free before each class to talk

Hey lplionheart, in regards to your post I just wanted to bring up the point where you mentioned about giving free advice at your gym, I wouldn't just start handing out things to get people to notice/like you. How would you know if they were talking to you because they like or because they are getting something for free? You should have more value about yourself and not have to do that, it's a nice gesture but that's just my opinion.

Perhaps opening one of the groups and ask them where the best place to get food/drink is (something simple just open) they may have mixed opinions which can be good because you can start a debate and get involved, then ask them how they all know each other or what papers they are doing and then introduce yourself and then go from there?

Hope it works out for you, let us know how it goes.

Just ask them questions about class. After you do that a little bit and get comfortable with them and establish a relationship where you at least acknowledge each other (after you always have in common the fact that you are both THERE) , change over to personal talk. Then you can start bringing stuff up, i.e. "I had lunch at the Italian place at the food court and it was so good! Have you ever eaten there?" or whatever. It's not too difficult, just bring up stuff that doesn't pertain to class and you'll get them to open up and get to know them. Eventually, they'll invite you somewhere, or you can invite them out casually.
