Post subject:  Roses Opener, any improvements?

So after using some openers I've read on here with relative success, I decided to try and come up with one of my own. It's worked fairly well but I'm wondering if there's any way I can improve it. Reads like this;

Me: Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get your opinion on roses, the flowers now, not the chocolates.

Her: Yeah great/prefer other flower etc.

Me: I only ask because I was speaking to a friend of mine earlier and he asked me for advice. As a gesture he bought his girlfriend half a dozen red roses, that's a nice thing to do right?

Her: Yeah/not a fan of flowers.

Me: Well, you'll never guess what she did? Literally took them and threw them straight in the trash, telling him they're cheesy and stereotypical. He wanted to know of this was a normal behaviour for women, so I figured who better to ask than women!

This tends to lead to opinions of some sort which open up for cocky/funny or negs as appropriate, even if the don't like flowers. Again, just wondering if I could improve it at all? Thanks in advance!

I've never used an opener like this. How successful are they? I usually make eye contact and say "hey". If they return it, even with a shy little smile, I approach and say "Hey I'm just wondering if you're my type or not" and then throw an assuming-statement (never a question) at them before they've got chance to process how cheeky I've just been; such as "so, you seem like a student".I see a lot of advice to be all James Dean and mysterious, but I keep it playful and smile a lot as though I'm having fun.

ps: In super markets I like to pass the same girl a few times and accuse her of following me.

Personally, I'm a fan of opinion based openers because they feel safer than trying to be cocky/funny from the off. That may be because I don't have the stones to try it, but I've had a reletively good success rate opening like this 'cause it establishes a base you can bridge from. I FT'd this particular one on 3 sets over the weekend and number closed them all. Feel free to try it if you so wish! Just let me know how you get on!
