I'm seeking EVERY strategic advantage in my competition with a friend. We are very competitive and good friends.

The deal is:

Post a craigslist m4w personal and see who gets the most legitimate responses.

We can't lie, or talk about our cars or careers because they are not equal. The add has to be overall original with no pictures. We'll review each others adds prior to posting to validate that they are morally conscionable and not cribbed. I know my opponent is good. I've already sought the opinions of female friends. They both thought it was funny at least.

I'm new to this, but well written. I'm confident.

With that in mind, critique:
Quote:
This add is so good I could date myself.

You're:
- female.
- adventurous. (Craigslist is an adventure.)
- sporting the most adorable nose.
- willing to provide womanly insight.
- not afraid to go out.
- not afraid to get teased when behaving awkwardly.
- into (pick one: music, sports, sushi, wine tasting)
- also into (more choices: science, mixed drinks, amusement parks)

I'm:
- a US Citizen (with a passport if you're Canadian.)
- used to shopping for clothes with female friends. (Don't expect this often.)
- always looking for another edgy MP3.
- 5'11" / 160lbs. (Canadian girls: 1.8M / 72.574KG)
- golfing in a league on Wednesdays.
- using a business haircut to my professional advantage.
- secure, stylish and basically awesome.

Write me a note. You might win a delicious beverage in a real nice restaurant.

Cheers.

Well man if you want to win then you won't put this list on Craigslist. Women are going to take one look at that and find another ad. I would take that and put that into written form without it being a list. Convey your personality man, convey the way you are through your writiing, and that will get you the girl.

Trust me, I am very good on Craigslist...ask any of my friends. Since I want to win... let me give you some extra help.

This is just a sample idea for you to draw from.

Headline: Suave guy seeks adventurous cutie for LTR

I'm the type of guy that most people misjudge at first. They see me out playing golf with my friend or my business haircut and think he's just another suit. What you can't see is that I'm confident in myself, stylish, and adventurous. I know what I want out of life and I'm persuing it. It's a shame there aren't more who can say the same thing.

I am looking for someone adventurous like me, that I can take with me. It's only right that you are social and able to be inserted in almost any situation because who knows where this will take us. Are you ready for this? You need to be into music, sports, mixed drinks, amusement parks, sushi, and wine tasting. Is any of this sounding familiar to you?

If it is then it's time you click on the link up there and send me a message with a little bit about yourself. You might just be the lucky winner of a delicious beverage with great company in a lovely restaurant. Pictures are appreciated and I will return the favor.

Hope it helps man,

Jon

Post subject:  Thanks

I was a little worried when you said do away with the bullet list. I've never seen one on craigslist and I've read hundreds of m4w adds lately. Since most adds fail, I figured it a good way to stand out.

Your example has me giddy. Thanks for the guidance.

I'll play devils advocate before letting you get away though. :D

Has anyone tried a bullet list? They are ubiquitous in marketing, but almost unheard of in the typical online personal (which I gather, typically suck.)

I compiled my add by seeing what NOT to do.

I'll play devil's advocate with you as well. I have seen this style of ad many many times. It's not like this is a new idea.

No one likes to compare themself to someone's list. I have actually read many source by other reputable sites that spefically discourage this in profiles because they don't work well.

Is that enough or should I keep going?!? :) Trust me on this.

Well it hasn't.

I redid my add and Craigslist will not accept it. :-(

I'll try again in a few days. I'm not sure what's wrong. Anyone have similar problems?

nope, just make sure you have no links and stuff. CL is uber-paranoid about spammers and yet they still get through.

Post subject:  Heres what I did for 9 real responses /+ 8/9 replies

Reply if you aren't a spambot - 27

Just reply if you exist in the real physical world as a woman. If you reply and give me an original reply that isn't canned telling me to go to an adult dating website then I will know real people are on this site. Right now I'm convinced theres just 100 people who post everywhere under different identities to route you to their sites. I'm completely serious. As a bonus if you reply to me, I promise to reply back - even if you're crazy, needy, jealous, twenty pounds past "average" or disfigured by a bodily injury. I will not reply to midgets. JK I love midgets too!

Now the downside of the teaser I noticed is that it may come off a bit desperate - I was really honestly doing a probe of the site for real ppl. But it does get humor across - 3 replies have said - hilarious or laughed my ass off, youre funny, etc.

Now the follow up template: For the 9 real replies - (50% of all replies BTW) this template scored a 8/9 return rate. So it seems to be solid: Use your head an in the [] Insert their unique characteristics.

Hey []…aka super spambot?? :P

Well my posting didn’t say too much about me other than the fact that I am real. I’m confident, funny, usually smiling, well groomed and connect with people on a personal level. Like my picture, I’m 5’11 with brown hair and the brown eyes. My ears do stick out a little but your nose probably wiggles when you laugh. Seriously it does, doesn’t it? That’s ok I do not hate on the nose wiggle girls. Am I making it wiggle yet? Oh well, had to try to inject humor. (shorten this if they look ADD)

Anyway; you should see by now I’m funny, connect well and am a very grounded person, if you don’t, see that I can give you some reading lessons or will provide very cheap tutoring on the weekends :) I was going to tell you about my job but you haven’t told me much about you other than [now fill in a one sentence summary about her - validate her concerns if shes been hurt or worried]. So how about this: I don’t want the same “interrogation” / interview boring screening routine where I get your job, age, ethnicity, religion. Tell me instead the three things that make you great and whether you would date Joe Mauer or Tom Brady it will say lots about who you are. Pics are worth double bonus points too. If I like what I hear, I swear to send you a much better picture of me and I’ll truthfully answer any question you throw at me. Just one though!

Well.........much like anything, its a chance.....

But anyway I think its kind of pointless to compete with someone in an online dating thing. Bad enough in real life but its really dumb when you have to throw the internet into it.
