Hey guys, I don't seem to get replies to messages on POF. Is my profile ok, or do I come across negatively ? http://www.pof.com/viewprofile.aspx?profile_id=45761647 Thanks for taking the time to read this. |

That looks pretty good to me but I'm a guy. Since looking at your details, I'm going to go double check mine and modify them. I really liked the 30,000 days line. |

Get rid of the picture of yourself in the hat. It's silly. But the biggest problem is that your profile is too much of a cookie cutter. Make it mysterious, funny, or both. |

Basically your profile is way too serious... You're a researcher and it shows. You should change your profession to something like "sleeping" or "collecting cans." You can leave your PhD as your education. Your interests need to be like this: (1) very unique/specific ones at the top (about half of all interests) and (2) very common/generic ones at the bottom (so that girls will see more #s in bracekts... which are the interests you have in common with them). As for your profile description... Change the whole thing. Go with mysterious, funny, or both as I outlined. Women on POF are flooded with messages and therefore they want something different to cut through the clutter -- so give them something different. |

Too boring and you're SPAM too much information about you. If you're looking for a relationship this profile would get you dates tho so it's ok u're a good looking chap |

Thanks for the advice everyone and thanks for the complement Nik, I hope all the girls agree with you ! Fly Swatter, I've updated my profile with a bid to achieve some more humour and give away less information. Is this the kind of thing you meant ? Also what are the common interests among girls you find work best to increase the #'s ? |

Still too serious. Every line you write needs to bring value. Everything from "I enjoy" to "Taekwondo" is boring and no girl would give a shit. However, you can put Taekwondo under your interests... Girls will notice if your profile is short enough (they take more time to look through your interests if your profile is short and sweet). Your best line is "A girl's got to ... ability to run in heels" as that conveys both humour and girls will seek your approval. Most women can or at least claim to be able to run in heels, so I bet that will be a common opener for women messaging you. Your introduction of "I have the luck of..." is also acceptable as that's original and conveys some light humour. Your first date idea is too romantic and you come off as a tryhard. Mine is literally "McDonald's and video games. My treat." For my profile description, all I have are two famous quotes that convey intelligence and mystery. When girls message me, they open by using one of the many specific interests I have listed... Or my profession which is "sleeping." Some common interests are things like music, movies, games, etc. Look around girls' profiles and just look at their interests. One last thing... You should be the one messaging girls -- you shouldn't be waiting for them to message you. And needless to say, you should be carrying the humour and mystery to your first date. Don't ever flat out tell a girl you're a researcher, even if she asks you. Instead, make her guess by giving her clues... In fact, go until the 2nd or 3rd date without telling her. |

The difference already is huge, I've actually had replies from my messages now! Thanks guys. I'll work on making my profile more mysterious / funny tomorrow. How many topics do you try and cover before moving onto text/phone/facebook/meeting ? Also what kind of topics do you cover ? (I'm happy opening) |

It's not how many topics... It's the quality of the topics. Again don't ask cookie cutter questions. Be original in your conversation. Also be mysterious in your replies to her questions. Once she shows enough interest or even hints at going out with me, then I'll ask for her phone number. This might take a day or two of exchanges. |

So to check cookie cutter questions would be, What do you do for a living, what did you do at the weekend etc mundane things. Asking her who'd win in a fight between 3 super hero's might be more interesting and different ? |

That's right. If it starts to sound like an interview, then you're on the wrong track. Think of all the guys asking routine questions. If it's a top 5 question asked, then you probably shouldn't ask her. Girls want something different to cut through the clutter. Girls have shown me their phones after logging onto POF and they get bombarded with messages the moment they go online. So your first couple messages are critical. Asking which superhero would win would be an original/different question that I'm sure would pique her interest. It would be a fitting question only if you're talking about a superhero movie or anything on topic. Don't blatantly ask such a random question out of the blue because you'll just seem odd. |
