Post subject:  Fumbling with a HB8, can I recover?

Well, I just started a facebook(just like myspace) convo with an HB8 and I'm already messing up. The girl went to the same college I did, and we met briefly once. On a whim, I decided to friend her (before I read the myspace method). She accepted the friend request very quickly, and the next day I sent her this:

Subject: Do I know you?

Body: Hey, you look really familiar and I was wondering if we've met. Btw, I love your glasses, they remind me of the secretary from Ghostbusters. (*meant to be a neg)

She responded with this:

HB8: yea i dont think so. but thanks for the compliment!

So, she totally missed my neg, and I sound totally AFCish. I'm also aware that my opener was pretty lame, but I'm horrible at openers and was trying to stand out. Anyway, have I blown this or can I recover? I was thinking about cutting that thread and going into the 'is kissing cheating opinion question, i.e.:

Ok, that actually works out for me because my close friend is having girl trouble and I could use a female opinion, and it'd probably be better to not blab his situation to people we know. Anyway, he and his girlfriend were on a break and blah blah blah...

So what do you guys think? Comments, criticism, should I eject?

I'd wait a little while (week or two), and come up with a DHV story that happened to you that day. I don't care if you make it up, but I usually just recycle past events that happened to me. Make it really exciting, and end it with asking her opinion about something involving the story. Try to make it sound like she has inside knowledge and can really help you for whatever reason. It may be tough to recover, but the perfect DHV story could reopen the thread.

Thanks a lot. I think I can handle the DHV story, but I'm not sure how to bring it up. She kind of closed off the conversation. Should I just launch right into it and not worry?

Yea, launch right into it. Something like, "Holy shit, you won't believe what just happened to me..." works well. Also, if you tailor the story so that her opinion matters on this one and it sounds like she could contribute some good advice or a good perspective (maybe she's related somehow) then it wouldn't seem so out of nowhere.
