Flying Solo is one of my favorite ways to go.

When poking around new venues, my favorite things to do are to quickly gain rapport and establish relationships with bartenders and bouncers -- when you return to the venue, you can easily be let in past long lines and get discounted drinks with some decent conversation and a good tip here and there -- those are things which give you tangible returns on your conversations. Also, when you return to the venue, you always have someone to talk to even if you're "alone", and its a huge DHV to get high fives / free drinks from bouncers and bartenders.

Having said that, what you're looking for are just the standard A / C Conversation Topics. Without getting into specifics, I would suggest you start with situational openers that deal with the venue you're at; in my experience, openers that begin with "Hey Guys, can I ask you something..." openers are very try hard, because they don't have their origins rooted in the venue. How long it takes to get a drink / the music is so loud / I like your handbag (That one will have a girl talk for 10 minutes straight.) are much more laid back and I prefer them.
The standard stock Strawberry Fields and The Cube are also heavily played out, but can be useful in a younger venue.
