| Post subject: | On porn and masturbation. |
I've just stumbled upon a really interesting article from Psychology Today about the effects of porn and masturbation. It's a good read for everyone dealing with social anxiety and poor self-image in general. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/cup ... g-too-much From the article: Quote: Over and over, a common pattern appears: As users manage to abstain from porn and cut way back on masturbation, their desire to connect with others surges. So does their confidence, their ability to look others in the eye, their sense of humor, their perception of their "manliness," their concentration, their optimism, their judgment, their attractiveness to potential mates, and so forth. Even those formerly suffering from social anxiety are more often than not emboldened to explore new avenues for social contact: smiling and joking with work colleagues, online dating, meditation groups, nightspots, and so forth. In some cases it takes months, but often the shift is so rapid that it catches them by surprise. (I'm not implying that social anxiety is solely due to porn use, or that extroversion is a sign of its absence. I'm merely wondering whether, for some, more careful management of sexual desire might be surprisingly beneficial.)
I can actually relate a lot. Even though I was not an "addict", stopping masturbation has changed me. I'm more confident, more self-assured and I'm eager to have social interactions. I'm also way more optimist.Try it out. |

I've stopped myself watching porn for a month at a time occasionally to see 1- how I change 2- get some peace of mind that im not addicted I can't tell much of a difference. I would say my sex performance increases a slightly, that's about it. |

All I can say is your biggest enemy is boredom. If you stay busy, get out more, work more/harder then it won't seem as difficult than if you're at home all day. |

Is this the only study you could find? I'm interested to see if you could find another that supports this one. Please forgive me of my skepticism. Last time I checked masturbation had no notable side effects. I'm not dogging the concept of abstaining from masturbation. I'm just not sure that masturbation has as many "mental" side effects as this article proclaims it does. I've used Google and found several men's health articles that were indeed reliable sources. None seem to have agreed with the aforementioned statements in this article. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/cup ... g-too-much From the article: Quote: Over and over, a common pattern appears: As users manage to abstain from porn and cut way back on masturbation, their desire to connect with others surges. I'm also way more optimist.Try it out. The only reason I personally think masturbation is a bad habit because it is potentially time consuming, especially if the individual is a "chronic masturbator" (2+ times a day). It takes a lot of time and concentration to masturbate that many times a day. Plus LOTS of free time. However, I've never seen anything that confirms the article above. Could the experiences you felt be "self-affirmations" instead of actual positive side effects? I'm not supporting a bad habit, but I find the claims in your post to be dubious at best. Quote: All I can say is your biggest enemy is boredom. If you stay busy, get out more, work more/harder then it won't seem as difficult than if you're at home all day.
I concur with your statement. Getting new hobbies and things to do often helps eliminate this hobby all together. A lot of people try and use "will power" against masturbation which is more often than not a losing battle. You can abstain for quite some time. However, when the opportune time arrives, you will most likely take that opportunity. This is why it is essential to develop new habits and explore new hobbies. Keeping busy and out of the house is a sure fire way for "most" to stop masturbating.

because actual sex releases different chemicals in your brain than masturbation. i mean think of it this way. masturbation is rewarding yourself for being anti-social.

I've never just had sex and thought "man I can't wait to go get laid" haha. But I would recommend once a week as it reduces the risk prostate and testicular cancer. |

Personally I feel that giving up porn for a while would make a massive difference to how I view women. My friends and I have always joked and laughed about how if you're a chronic porn user, the shit you watch gradually becomes more and more disturbing or extreme and what previously turned you on no longer does. There was a really interesting thread somewhere on this forum with a link to a study regarding this but I can't remember what it was. Anyway, I digress. I'm not going to cut down on masturbation (don't think I could tbh). But... I'm banning porn completely for a month, which is a long time for me.Just to see how it will make me feel in terms of viewing women as mere sex objects, (my aim is to stop viewing them as sex objects) |

I don't know if the article is correct, but generally speaking it makes sense. Think about it: Porn is 9/10 in an 'un-natural' setting/environment. The people involved aren't real, the storylines aren't real and the sex isn't. The way I see it, it's like a cheap thrill. Instead of having proper sex, you get about 10% of the real thing, for much less effort - and if you do that every day - you will be satisfied to an extent. And with satisfaction grows a form of laziness, that you do not care for the real thing so much. That's just my view on it, and of course with medical stuff there's always bizarre/clashing evidence so I may be all wrong. |

I think Internet porn has alot to answer for as others have said people need to keep watching something more extreme each time to get the same kicks. I work in IT and i honestly think porn has ruined my life sounds harsh but its true I started looking at it when i was 17 and now im 33 still do its terrible. When I do stop watching it I feel more confident I can look people (girls) in the eye but if ive been watching alot I cant. I need to keep my self busy but have very little money at the moment. |

Masturbation is not Adventure. We as men are built on adventure, ever since little kids. Always wanting to go out and "slay the dragon." One reason a man may feel down and regret looking at porn/masturbating (I know for a FACT That I do...) is because we forgo the adventure and sucumb to the rapid pace of the world. "THIS IS WHAT A WOMAN IS AND IF YOU CAN'T HAVE SEX WITH HER IN REAL LIFE WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED. DON'T EVEN BOTHER IN FACT. PAY US MONEY AND WE'LL REWARD YOU." And that's what it is... a reward for lieing to yourself about not wanting to fight the battle, go out on adventure, sweep the maiden out from under her feet. Masturbation is a weakness. |
